Step Up for Breastfeeding. Educate and Support

Philippine Pediatric Society Eastern Visayas Chapter celebrated Breastfeeding Month with several activities that aims to educate healthcare workers and support the community for successful breastfeeding. This was conducted from August 27, 2022 to August 30, 2022 every 2:00 PM at the Activity Center of Robinsons Place Marasbaras.

Breastfeeding Bee
Healthcare workers from Eastern Visayas showcased their knowledge on breastfeeding during the first day of the celebration last August 27. The quiz master of the said event was Dr. Mitzchel. Merin. It was a close fight among the participants but ultimately ACE Medical Center, represented by Leslie Rose Canalejas and Desiree Sabino won the first price. They received a plaque, certificate and 5,000 pesos. On second place was Leyte Provincial Hospital represented by Ana Rethcie Lagaday and Maria Mila Baltazar who received a plaque, certificates and 4,000 pesos. And on third place were April Joyce Hacbang and Shiela Mariz Panis representing United Shalom Hospital.

Mother’s Class on Lactation and Breastfeeding
On the second day of the celebration, we invited pregnant and lactating mothers, Barangay Health Workers, interns and clerks to join a Mother’s Class on Lactation and Breastfeeding. There were a total of 41 attendees. The class was conducted by Dr. Marie Ann Corsino, a breastfeeding advocate and a well-respected pediatrician. Dr. Gemma Ramos served as the Emcee
At the end of the class, there was also a raffle draw were the audience won bath tubs for babies, bed sets, and clothes among others. The prizes were courtesy of Little Creatures.

Malunggay Cook Off
Different aspiring chefs from Eastern Visayas were invited to participate in the contest. The challenge was to prepare dishes which will highlight the use of malunggay as main ingredient. Each contestant prepared two dishes, 1 appetizer or snack and 1 entrée or main course. Malunggay of course is a common plant found in the Philippines widely used for cooking. Its leaves are a natural galactagogue - a substance that promotes or increases the flow of a mother's milk.
Ma’am Felicita Borata of DOH, Elle Catugda owner of Tasty Kitchen and Reina Canonoy a breastfeeding mom had the toughest time judging as the dishes presented were all appetizing and plated tastefully. Abegail Hinay, a NICU nurse of ACE Medical Center won the first prize. She created Cheesy Ground Pork Roll with Malunggay and Morban Cake (Moringa and Banana Cake). She received 5,000 pesos, a plaque and a certificate, Angeles Matela, a home cook won the second prize with her Linawagan na Malunggay with Buko Ganas and P**o Rice with Malunggay. She received 4,000 pesos, a plaque and a certificate. And on third place was Jessa May Magpatoc who made Rolled Omelet with Malunggay and Oatmeal Cookies with Malunggay. She won 3,000 pesos, a certificate and plaque.
The event was also graced with the presence of the Assistant City Health Officer, Dr. Gloria E. Fabrigas. She was there on behalf of Mr. Raymund Romualdez, the founder of Hiraya Foundation who sponsored some of the prizes. The cook off was hosted by Dr. Mary Grace Tan-Uy.

Awards and Culmination
August 30, 2022 was the culminating program where we gathered all the winners to give them the prizes they won. This was hosted by Dr. Nikka Saavedra.

After several days of heavy rainfall, the sun finally shone and yesterday some members of PPS EV were able to visit both Abuyog and Baybay Leyte. These are the 2 municipalities heavily affected by the recent typhoon which caused flooding and landslides. It destroyed homes and livelihood and took so many lives.
We came back home carrying with us an indiscernible feeling. A feeling of relief that our colleagues in that area are all well and safe. A feeling of satisfaction that we were able to help our fellow Leyteños yet incomplete because we feel like we have to do more.
The devastation we saw was beyond words. What used to be a picturesque, quaint little towns were covered with mud. In some areas only the roof is left in what used to be their homes but in some, you see nothing but a big patch of dirt.
We have heard their stories which again left us with an indiscernible feeling. Their stories of survival, grief and despair. We heard the story of a boy from Baybay who survived, albeit with a fractured leg, by hiding inside a refrigerator. His parents and siblings were not as lucky. He is now left under the care of his aunt. His bone will heal for sure but one wonders if he will completely and truly heal. In Abuyog the personnel form the RHU told us that there were several infants as young as 3 months old who lost their mothers. How does someone grow up without their mother’s guiding love? A number of people lost their homes and their livelihood. They have no choice but to rebuild their lives but where will they begin? Is there a reset button one can press to restart their life? In the end we can only pray for them. We pray that God gives them will to move forward despite the hopelessness they feel. We pray that the people who lost their loved ones will feel more love from everyone that surrounds them. We pray that those who were injured and sick be touched by God’s healing and merciful hands. We pray that God gives them strength to carry this burden and more importantly, we pray that there will be more people who will be there to help them carry the load.
In our little way, PPS EV is grateful that we were able to contribute in alleviating the suffering of the people in Baybay and Abuyog. We thank everyone who donated and shared to love to our tormented brothers in Leyte. We were able to send them medicines, medical supplies and breastmilk among others. Just a few minutes after we handed our donation to the hospital pharmacy, the ER was already able to use the IV meds donated.
This crisis is far from over as many of them are still living in evacuation center. They are still in need of food, water, medical supplies and materials to rebuild their homes. Hence our donation drive continues until the 30th of April. Donations can be given to Dr. Jim Ngo’s G cash 09173049000. For more inquires you may get in touch with Dr. Nelita Salinas, Dr. Grace Tan-Uy, Dr. Eden Bague or Dr. Mitchel Merin. May we be a blessing to others.
