"Understanding Eating Problems and Building Healthy Habits"
Mealtime with toddlers and preschoolers can sometimes feel challenging. One day they love a certain food, the next day they refuse it. They may become picky, avoid new foods, dislike certain textures, throw food, eat slowly, or have tantrums at the table.
But these feeding problems are not always about being โhard-headed.โ They can be part of a childโs growth, independence, sensory preferences, routine, or environment. What matters most is how we guide them with patience, consistency, and care (Pjetraj et al., 2025; Savage et al., 2017). ๐ฑ
๐ถ๐ป Common feeding problems include:
Picky eating
Food jags
Fear of trying new food or food neophobia
Texture aversion
Low vegetable intake
Mealtime tantrums
Food dawdling or taking too long to eat
๐ก What can parents and caregivers do?
โ๏ธ Stay calm during meals
โ๏ธ Offer new foods many times without forcing
โ๏ธ Eat together as a family
โ๏ธ Give simple, healthy choices
โ๏ธ Set regular meal and snack times
โ๏ธ Avoid pressure, bribes, and food battles
โ ๏ธ Seek medical advice if the child loses weight, stops growing, frequently chokes or gags, eats only one food group, or needs special feeding support.
Healthy eating habits are built little by little. With love, patience, and consistent routines, children can learn to enjoy food and develop better eating behaviors for life. ๐
