๐ธ Cervical cancer is the abnormal growth of cells in the cervix. It is the 4th most common cancer in women worldwide and the 2nd most common cancer among women in the Philippines.
๐ธ What causes Cervical Cancer?
Almost all cervical cancer cases (99%) are linked to infection with high-risk Human papillomavirus (HPV), an extremely common virus transmitted through sexual contact.
๐ธWhat are the risk factors for Cervical Cancer?
๐Women who had early sexual contact (< 20 years old)
๐ Women with multiple sexual partners
๐ Women with previous STI
๐ Women with abnormal pap smear
๐ Women who are immunocompromised (with Diabetes Mellitus, SLE, or taking steroids)
๐ Women with sister or mother having cervical cancer
๐Women who smoke
๐ธ What are the symptoms of Cervical Cancer?
The first symptoms of cervical cancer include heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, vaginal bleeding during sexual contact, and watery, bloody discharge that may have a foul odor.
๐ธ How to prevent Cervical Cancer?
Although Cervical Cancer is a deadly disease, it can be prevented and treated, if caught early. Women between 9-14 years old can be vaccinated with HPV vaccine while those 30-65 years old can be screened regularly through Visual Inspection via Acetic Acid (VIA), Pap smear and HPV DNA test.
