🚨 𝗟𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀🚨

With the consecutive rains in our region occasionally flooding some areas, we need to keep in mind the ever-lurking danger of LEPTOSPIROSIS.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that commonly manifests with fever, muscle pains, and headaches, with severe cases potentially leading to kidney failure, bleeding, and death. People get this infection from contact with water, food, or soil contaminated with the urine or body fluids of infected animals such as rats, cats, dogs, and livestock.

The most common cause is exposure to contaminated floodwaters, as leptospira bacteria can enter through cuts/abrasions in the skin, through our mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth), or even through intact skin!

That’s why it’s important to AVOID wading or swimming in floodwaters, and especially to teach children NOT to play in floodwaters.
We should also avoid eating food or taking drinks that may be contaminated by floodwater, or any body fluids of infected animals.

If you have been exposed to floodwaters, your doctor can prescribe antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent leptospirosis, with the dose depending on whether your exposure is low-risk, moderate-risk, or high-risk. Consult with a physician for proper evaluation and management.

Remember, all floodwaters are potentially contaminated, no matter how fresh or clean they may appear! Educating your family & loved ones about this danger can save them from leptospirosis.

This month, let’s highlight the importance of sun safety and skin cancer prevention. Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide. It’s also one of the most preventable!

🔍 Know Your Skin: Perform a skin self-exam. Take the time to check your skin regularly for any changes, including new moles or spots, changes in an existing mole or sores that don’t heal. Consult a dermatologist if you notice anything unusual. Remember, early detection is KEY!

🌞 Protect Your Skin: Wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, seek shade, especially avoiding peak sun hours between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and wear protective clothing and accessories like wide brimmed hats and sunglasses.

💡 Spread Awareness: Educate yourself and others about the risks of sun exposure and the importance of early detection and prevention. Together, we can make a difference in reducing the incidence of skin cancer.
