☺️
Celebrating the International Day for PWDs with this thought:

Not all PWDs use wheelchairs, not all persons with visual impairment are totally blind, and those with hearing challenges are not all deaf.

It’s happening today!

The National Council on Disability Affairs joins the nation and the world in celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025.

With the theme “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress,” we honor the contributions, strengths, and voices of persons with disabilities—and reaffirm our commitment to a more accessible and inclusive Philippines.

Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities!

Let’s celebrate inclusion, participation, and empowerment for all.

When lived experience with blindness shares, it helpful when those around us, learn so we can all feel welcome and included.

Saying “hello” and using your name is very important to me. I do not see the smile, nod, wave, or facial expression that most people rely on, so a simple “Hi Vanessa, it’s ____” lets me you are talking to me and lets me know who is speaking, making every interaction feel natural and welcoming.

Please speak directly to me. I am blind, not deaf. There is no need to raise your voice or speak through someone else. Addressing me directly shows respect and acknowledges me as the person you are engaging with.

If I arrive in a new area or meeting space, I may need a quick verbal cue to find a chair or move safely out of the way. Simple, clear directions like “The chair is just behind you,” or “The doorway is three steps to your right,” are extremely helpful. Do not grab my arm, shoulder, or hand without asking. Physical contact without permission can be startling and takes away my independence. If I need physical guidance, I will ask for it.

Please never touch or grab my cane. My cane is an extension of my body and my safety. Moving it, taking it, or even nudging it can throw off my orientation and cause confusion.

When I am accompanied by someone, please still speak directly to me. I am fully capable of answering questions, making decisions, and explaining what I need. It is important to treat the person with the disability as the main point of communication.

Inclusion matters. Please involve me in activities and conversations just as you would any other parent or adult. I greatly appreciate being invited, included, and considered. I will always tell you if something is not accessible or safe for me.

Technology is completely accessible for me. Email, text, and phone calls all work exceptionally well. I may not always be able to help physically with certain tasks, but I am excellent on the phone and more than happy to support in ways that are accessible to me.

Above all, treat me with the same equality and respect as any other adult. I am here to participate, support, and engage just like everyone else. If you are ever unsure about something, please just ask me. Open communication truly is the key.

Thank you again for your care and willingness to learn.

🎤 Speech! Speech?

A massage says “thank you” better than a speech. 😉
