New research reveals a shocking truth about sleep deprivation: prolonged lack of sleep can cause the brain to literally start consuming itself. When the body is severely sleep-deprived, brain cells enter a state of stress and trigger a process called autophagy, where neurons break down their own components to survive. While autophagy is normal in moderation, excessive activation caused by sleep loss can lead to cognitive decline, memory problems, and reduced brain function over time.

Sleep is essential not just for rest, but for the brain’s maintenance and repair. During deep sleep, the brain clears toxins, strengthens neural connections, and restores overall function. Skipping sleep interrupts these critical processes, putting your brain health at serious risk.

This research highlights that chronic sleep deprivation is more than feeling tired—it can have long-term effects on mental performance, memory, and overall brain structure. Prioritising 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep nightly isn’t a luxury; it’s vital for maintaining your cognitive health and protecting your brain from long-term damage.

Polysomnography (PSG) is a critical diagnostic tool in the assessment of pediatric sleep apnea, as it provides comprehensive data on sleep architecture, respiratory patterns, and related physiological parameters. This information is essential for accurately diagnosing the presence and severity of sleep-disordered breathing, guiding appropriate treatment options, and monitoring therapy effectiveness to optimize outcomes for affected children.

What Is Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

It’s a Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) where a child’s breathing stops or becomes shallow due to blocked upper airway (often from large tonsils/adenoids).

Signs include loud snoring, restless sleep, daytime sleepiness, and poor attention in school.
Diagnostics include upper airway endoscopy and polysomnography (sleep study).

Treatment may involve tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy or CPAP therapy.

When Is Tonsillectomy or Adenoidectomy Recommended in Kids?

These procedures may be advised if your child has:
✔️ Frequent throat infections
✔️ Breathing or swallowing problems
✔️ Sleep apnea due to enlarged tonsils/adenoids

Discuss with your ENT doctor if your child’s symptoms interfere with sleep, speech, or quality of life.

My Child Snores—Should I Be Worried?

Occasional snoring is common in children. But loud, frequent snoring with gasping, choking, or pauses in breathing may signal sleep apnea, often caused by enlarged tonsils or adenoids.

It’s best to consult an ENT specialist for evaluation and possible sleep study.

ENT4GP Postgraduate Roadshow: Mastering ENT Conditions in Primary Care Settings

---

👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ In today’s fast-paced clinical setting, primary care physicians (PCPs) are at the frontline of patient care, often serving as the first point of contact for individuals presenting with ear, nose, and throat (ENT) complaints. Yet, despite the high prevalence of ENT-related disorders in general practice—from otitis media and allergic rhinitis to hoarseness and vertigo—many PCPs feel underprepared to confidently diagnose and manage these conditions.

Recognizing this need, the PSO-HNS Southern Mindanao Chapter and its partners developed a Postgraduate Course in ENT for Primary Care Physicians—a practical, evidence-based training designed to equip frontline clinicians with the tools they need to deliver high-quality ENT care.
