Reticulocyte Count – Why is it important?

What is it?

Reticulocytes are immature red blood cells (RBCs)

Purpose

Reticulocyte count measures how well the bone marrow is producing new RBCs.

Normal Range

Adults: 0.5% – 2.5%

Newborns: 2% – 6%

High Count

Suggests increased RBC production (e.g. blood loss, hemolytic anemia, recovery from anemia)

Here are some phlebotomy tricks to help you become a pro at drawing blood:

1. *Choose the right needle*: Select a needle that's appropriate for the patient's vein size and type.

2. *Position the patient*: Ensure the patient's arm is relaxed and at heart level.

3. *Locate the vein*: Use palpation or visualization to find a suitable vein.

4. *Clean and prep*: Clean the site with antiseptic and let it dry.

5. *Insert the needle*: Enter the skin at a 15-20° angle, bevel up.

6. *Stabilize the needle*: Hold the needle steady, don't move it around.

7. *Collect the sample*: Allow blood to flow into the collection tube.

8. *Remove the needle*: Withdraw the needle at the same angle it was inserted.

9. *Apply pressure*: Press a gauze pad to the site for a few minutes.

10. *Label and transport*: Label the sample correctly and transport it to the lab.

Some additional tips:

- Use a tourniquet to help locate veins
- Use a butterfly needle for harder-to-reach veins
- Avoid touching the needle tip to prevent contamination
- Be gentle and communicate with the patient throughout the process
