Cold, Flu & Our Responsibility
These days, viral infections are spreading rapidly and unfortunately, many of us are unknowingly contributing to this spread. Most patients with cold and flu symptoms are also experiencing fever, and in children the temperature is rising as high as 105°F, often persisting for several days.
As healthcare professionals, especially pharmacists and clinical pharmacists, it is our duty to guide the community with correct preventive practices and safe use of medicines.
Preventive Measures
1. Self-isolate, when you develop flu-like symptoms.
2. Wear a mask consistently and dispose of it properly in a dustbin after use.
3. Prefer verbal greetings—handshakes are not necessary during illness.
4. Avoid spitting in public places. If needed, use a drain or basin and rinse the area with water.
5. Rinse your nose and throat with lukewarm water several times a day.
6. Do not send sick children to school to protect other students from infection.
Recommended Diet
Increase protein intake such as eggs and meat.
Warm broths/soups are highly beneficial.
Freshly cooked lentils and vegetables, especially cabbage, support recovery.
Symptomatic Treatment & Safe Use of Medicines
Herbal Home Remedy:
Boil together one chopped onion, a small piece of ginger, two sliced lemons, 3 cloves of garlic, 2 small pieces of cinnamon, 2 cloves, and some mint leaves.
Strain the water, add one teaspoon honey, and drink warm.
(Diabetic patients should monitor their sugar levels before using honey.)
Additional Supportive Care:
Gargle with warm water mixed with salt, aspirin (Disprin), or Listerine.
Take Vitamin C supplements.
For fever, paracetamol may be used once or twice.
If the fever persists or symptoms worsen, consult a qualified healthcare provider immediately.
A Clinical Pharmacist’s Message
Self-medication without proper knowledge can be harmful. Always seek guidance from licensed pharmacists and clinical pharmacists, who are trained to provide evidence-based recommendations, identify drug interactions, monitor symptoms, and guide safe medication use.
Stay informed, stay responsible, and protect your community.
