A ganglion cyst is a noncancerous lump that typically forms along the tendons or joints of your wrists, hands, ankles, or feet. It's filled with a jelly-like fluid and is often painless, although it can cause discomfort or limit movement.
Symptoms include a visible lump, pain or discomfort, and sometimes numbness or tingling. The exact cause is unknown, but they often develop when synovial fluid leaks out from a joint or tendon sheath.
Diagnosis is usually done through physical examination and medical history. Imaging tests like ultrasound or MRI may be used to confirm the diagnosis or rule out other conditions.
Treatment options include monitoring the cyst if it's not causing significant discomfort, draining the cyst with a needle (aspiration), or surgically removing it. Management involves rest, activity modification, and sometimes wearing a splint.
Prevention is challenging as the cause is unclear, but avoiding repetitive joint movements and maintaining joint health may reduce the risk. If you suspect you have a ganglion cyst, consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and guidance.
