Sinus Headaches:
‼️ PRESSURE IN THE FACE & HEAD
‼️ FLU SYMPTOMS: running nose and nasal congestion
Sinuses are air-filled spaces inside the forehead, cheekbones and behind the bridge of the nose. When they get inflamed (can be from allergic reactions or an infection) they swell, make more mucus, and the channels that drain them can get blocked.
The build-up of pressure in sinuses can cause pain that feels like a headache.
❌ SYMPTOMS
- Deep and constant pain in cheekbones, forehead or bridge of your nose
- Pain can get stronger when you move your head suddenly or strain
- Runny nose
- Feeling of fullness in your ears
- Fever
- Swelling in your face
- Fatigue
- Achy feeling in your upper teeth
- Lessened sense of smell
- Green or yellow mucus when blowing your nose
Sinus headaches can be mistake for migraines or tension headaches, and it’s important to know which one you’re experiencing to implement the right treatment. You can quickly identify if you have sinusitis by checking if you have a fever - if you have a sinus blockage you’ll also likely have a fever (unlike migraines and tension headaches).
❌ CAUSES
- Sinus headaches are usually caused by sinus infections
- Inflammation and decreased ability of the sinuses to drain may also be caused by an allergic reaction (ie. hay fever) - the inflammation causes swelling and increased fluid production
- Most sinus infections are caused by viruses (viruses are more likely the cause if symptoms have been present for less than a week and are not getting worse)
✔️ TREATMENT
The goal is to relieve your symptoms and treat an infection if you have one. For those suffering minor sinus headaches, simple at-home tricks such as drinking more fluids, using a humidifier or a nasal spray can provide relief. Antihistamines may also provide some support, but in other cases you may wish to visit the doctor if the pain is of greater discomfort. If the pain is bearable, painkillers may also provide some relief so rest can be achieved.
✔️ Other home remedies we recommend
- Breathing in steam (can help to open up the nasal passages and sinuses)
- Clean the nose with a salt water solution
- Use a warm washcloth to release the face of pain and pressure

OCCIPITAL NEURALGIA
The Neck/Head Pain that Results from Injury or Irritation to the Occipital Nerves.
If you are experiencing neck pain and pain in the back of your head that shoots to the top of your head, you may be suffering from occipital neuralgia.
💡 Occipital Neuralgia Facts & Information
Patients with occipital neuralgia can go undiagnosed and suffer for many years because symptoms can mimic more common headaches such as migraines. However, the treatment for occipital neuralgia is specific, making an accurate diagnosis essential for pain relief. Once diagnosed, occipital neuralgia typically responds well to treatment. Our broad-certified pain physicians can offer you the most advanced non-surgical options available, enabling you to return to an active lifestyle.

💡 How & Why Does Occipital Neuralgia Develop
Much of the feeling in the back and top of the head is transmitted to the brain by the two occipital nerves, which emerge from the spine in the upper neck and travel to the top of the head.
Irritation of an occipital nerve anywhere along its course can cause a shooting or stabbing pain in the neck, radiating over the head. Between bouts of shooting pain, there also can be a constant ache. Sometimes,
the pain is referred to behind the eyes. Other symptoms can include dizziness and nausea.

Occipital neuralgia is the neck/head pain that results from injury or irritation to the occipital nerves. It can be caused by trauma, such as a car accident, by a pinched nerve root in the neck (from arthritis, for example) or by “tight” muscles at the back of the head that entrap the nerves.

💡 Symptoms
Symptoms can be mild or severe in nature and could include the following:
➡️ Shooting pain in the neck – radiating over the head
➡️ Constant headaches
➡️ Pain behind the eyes
➡️ Dizziness
➡️ Nausea
💡 Diagnosis
Proper diagnosis starts with an experienced physician. The type of pain that you may have with occipital neuralgia can be similar to the symptoms of several types of disorders. Accurately determining the correct source of your pain is critical to successful treatment.
