As a practitioner, certain essential steps should be taken with every client, whether they explicitly ask for them or not. These include:

1. Addressing Sleep Hygiene: Ensuring the client has healthy sleep practices as it significantly impacts mental well-being.

2. Enhancing Communication Skills: Helping the client transition towards assertive and effective communication.

3. Managing Anger: Assisting the client in understanding and regulating their anger constructively.

4. Improving Dietary Habits and Lifestyle: Guiding the client towards healthier eating patterns and lifestyle modifications.

5. Focusing on Emotional Regulation: Supporting the client in managing and expressing emotions effectively.

6. Providing a Safe Space: Recognizing that the client may have no one else to confide in, making it crucial to actively listen with empathy and without judgment.

7. Offering Unconditional Positive Regard: Validating their feelings and experiences to foster trust and acceptance.

By integrating these elements into every session, you create a holistic and supportive environment that encourages growth and healing.

The Power of Active Listening in School Counselling
"Sometimes, all a student needs is someone who listens—not to respond, but to patiently listen and truly understand."
In my role as a school counsellor, I’ve learned that active listening is one of the most powerful tools in creating a safe and supportive environment for students. Whether it’s a 1st grader struggling with classroom engagement or a 12th grader feeling the weight of academic and parental expectations, empathetic listening helps unlock trust and understanding.
Here’s why active listening matters in schools:
👉 It validates emotions: When students feel heard, they’re more likely to open up and work toward solutions.
👉 It identifies root causes: Beneath surface issues often lie deeper challenges, like grief, anxiety, or self-doubt.
👉 It builds connections: Trust fosters growth, resilience, and self-awareness in students.
Through my experience, I’ve noticed recurring patterns that highlight the importance of listening. Recently, a student shared how overwhelming her family’s expectations felt, despite her academic excellence. Simply listening—without judgment or rushing to provide solutions—helped her feel acknowledged. Together, we worked on strategies to manage her stress and communicate her feelings to her family effectively.
How We Can All Practice Better Listening:
✨ Make eye contact.
✨ Acknowledge feelings without interrupting.
✨ Ask open-ended questions.
As professionals, it’s also essential to recognize when empathetic listening is enough and when students might need therapeutic intervention or additional guidance. It’s not that students need solutions every time or for all their problems—they often just need someone to listen when they feel unheard. Sometimes, that alone is enough to help them find their way forward.
Let’s continue creating environments where every student feels seen, heard, and supported.
What’s one way you practice active listening in your interactions? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
