Arthritis
Arthritis means inflammation or swelling of one or more joints. It describes more than 100 conditions that affect the joints, tissues around the joint, and other connective tissues. Arthritis is a disease that affects your joints (areas where your bones meet and move). Arthritis usually involves inflammation or degeneration (breakdown) of your joints.
Which type of arthritis is most common?
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis. Some people call it degenerative joint disease or “wear and tear” arthritis. It occurs most frequently in the hands, hips, and knees.
What are 5 symptoms of arthritis?
1. Pain, swelling and stiffness in one or multiple joints.
2. Morning stiffness in and around the affected joints lasting at least one hour.
3. Pain and stiffness that worsens with inactivity and improves with physical activity.
4. Reduced range of motion.
5. Sometimes fever, weight loss, fatigue and/or anemia.
Can you live with arthritis without treatment?
Without appropriate treatment, chronic pain, disability, and excess mortality are unfortunate outcomes of this disease. RA causes joint damage in 80% to 85% of patients, with the brunt of the damage occurring during the first 2 years of the disease. Left untreated, the risk of mortality is increased.
