Metformin is more than just a sugar-lowering medicine.
It helps your body use energy better.
How it works?
It turns on an enzyme (AMPK) that tells your body:
– Stop making fat
– Start burning fat
– Take in more sugar from blood
– Stop making extra sugar in the liver
This means better sugar control from the root.
It’s also helpful in PCOS.
Why? It improves ovulation and boosts fertility.
Usual dose: 500–850 mg twice a day
Max dose: 2000 mg/day
(For comparison: Glimepiride’s max is 8 mg)
Half-life: 1.5 to 3 hours → Remember this.
Good news?
– No risk of low sugar
– Helps with weight loss
– Protects the heart, eyes, and kidneys
But, it’s not perfect.
Avoid if the patient has serious acid buildup (like DKA).
Watch for side effects:
– Loose motions
– Bloating
– Metallic taste
– Vitamin B12 deficiency (common)
– Lactic acidosis (very rare but serious)
Metformin is simple, safe, and smart.
Old, but gold.
