Every cell in the body depends upon thyroid hormones for the regulation of its metabolism.

📌 How is T4 converted to T3?

Reactions that catalyse the conversion of thyroid hormones are triggered by enzymes called deiodinases, which come in 3 forms:

🔹 deodinase type I (D1) converts inactive T4 to active T3 throughout the body. D1 can be suppressed and down-regulated in response to stress, insulin resistance, inflammation, gut dysbiosis.

🔹 deodinase type II (D2)

🔹 deodinase type III (D3)

📌 The type 1 and type II deiodinases are primarily responsible for the conversion of T4 to T3, whereas the type III deiodinase is mainly involved in the inactivation of T4 and T3.

Factors that may affect the conversion of T4 to T3:

❗ Nutrient deficiencies such as selenium, zinc, iron deficiency.

❗ Stress: chronic physical, psychological, or environmental stress may result in decreased D1 activity.

❗ Inflammation: may decrease D1 activity and reduce tissue T3 levels.

❗ Insulin resistance: may affect T4 to T3 conversion.

❗ Low-calorie diet, dieting, or weight loss may result in reduced T4 to T3 conversion.

This news is huge—it will offer people with type 2 diabetes more options for their basal insulin and remove the burden of daily injections for many. This new option could be a better fit for millions of people. We're thrilled to see this progress!
