Consultant Internal Medicine, Hematology & BMT at Quaid-e-Azam International Hospital, Dr. Shahzad Nasir says plasma therapy should not be considered as a cure for coronavirus.
Dr. Shahzad Nasir further warned that there could be serious side effects of plasma therapy, including febrile reactions [temperature increase and sometimes headache and back pain], allergic reactions, transfusion-associated circulatory overload, bronchospasm, transfusion-related acute lung injury and transmission of diseases like HIV, hepatitis B and C and others.

Quaid-e-Azam International Hospital, Islamabad has started its Department of Clinical Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) on 22nd Sep 2017, headed by Maj. Gen. (Retd) Dr. Parvez Ahmed. We have performed successful Bone marrow transplants in thalassemia, aplastic anemia and blood cancers. Patients suffering from blood cancers are also being treated with chemotherapy in our department
Maj. Gen. (Retd) Dr. Parvez retired from Armed Forces on 1st Sept 2017. He is one of the pioneers in the field of BMT in Pakistan, has worked as Consultant Hematologist & BMT physician at Armed Forces Bone Marrow Transplant Centre Rawalpindi since its establishment in Mar 2001. He has contributions in conception, planning, ex*****on and successful functioning of the largest and prestigious bone marrow transplant program of the country at AFBMTC. He is one of the founder members and was its commandant from Aug 2009 to Aug 2016 and also commanded AFIP Rawalpindi from Aug 2016 to Aug 2017
There is high prevalence of various blood diseases like thalassemia and blood cancer in the country and region. In addition to Bone marrow transplant, we are offering comprehensive facility for diagnosis and management of various blood diseases including blood cancers, pre-transplant assessment of patient and donor, pre-transplant management, post-transplant follow-up and management of complications. The program is registered with Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR).
