🌸 This Pink October, the DAI Fleming Fund Country Grant Pakistan stands in solidarity with everyone affected by breast cancer. 💟

Early detection, timely treatment, and responsible health practices save lives.

People undergoing cancer treatment are often more vulnerable to infections and may require antibiotics. However, the overuse or misuse of antibiotics can lead to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) — making infections harder to treat and recovery more challenging.

Let’s raise awareness, promote infection prevention, and preserve the power of antibiotics to protect those fighting cancer and ensure better health outcomes for all. 🌍

🌍 Strengthening Pakistan’s Response to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)!

We are proud to announce the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Microbiology Laboratory at Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Hyderabad/Jamshoro, established in collaboration with the DAI-led Fleming Fund Country Grant Pakistan (FFCGP).

Led by Prof. Ikramudin Ujjan, Vice Chancellor LUMHS, the event brought together public health leaders, faculty, laboratory experts, and AMR stakeholders to celebrate a significant step toward advancing AMR surveillance and health security in Pakistan.

Prof. Ujjan, speaking as Chief Guest, praised the partnership with FFCGP, noting:

“The Government of Sindh is committed to coordinated action on AMR. This new lab reflects our resolve to translate strategy into action through investments in diagnostics and data.”

Dr. Mehmood Iqbal, Provincial Program Manager, FFCGP–DAI, emphasized the urgency of robust AMR surveillance, highlighting the Government of Sindh’s commitment to strengthening diagnostic infrastructure.

The newly refurbished facility—recognized by the Government of Sindh as a provincial AMR reference laboratory—is equipped with advanced microbiological diagnostics and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST), strengthening regional capacity for data-driven disease control.

This milestone underscores the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing one of the world’s most pressing public health challenges.

Pakistan Leads South Asia with a Digital Track & Trace System for Antibiotics

For years, Pakistan struggled with a hidden crisis: the unchecked, irrational use of antibiotics across human and animal health. Without a centralised system, tracking the journey of medicines—from import to prescription—was nearly impossible.

That changed when the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), with support from the DAI–Fleming Fund Country Grant, launched South Asia’s first national digital Track & Trace (T&T) system for antibiotics.

This groundbreaking platform is transforming pharmaceutical regulation by:
🔹 Tracking antibiotics in real time, from factory to pharmacy
🔹 Curbing counterfeit and substandard medicines
🔹 Providing reliable data to global surveillance systems (WHO GLASS, WOAH ANIMUSE)
🔹 Enabling a One Health approach, integrating human and animal antibiotic use

The results are already visible. Pakistan is now reporting robust data to global systems, strengthening oversight of antibiotic use, and setting a regional benchmark for digital AMR surveillance.

“This project demonstrates how digital innovation can solve long-standing public health challenges. Fleming Fund is proud to support Pakistan’s leadership in AMR surveillance.” — DAI-Fleming Fund Project Lead

✨ From challenge to solution, this case shows how digital innovation and governance reform can protect lives, safeguard medicines, and inspire global action against AMR.

🔴 September is Sepsis Awareness Month — a reminder of the urgent need to recognize, prevent, and respond to this silent emergency.

📊 Key facts:

In 2023, 7.8 million cases of sepsis were diagnosed across eight major markets, leading to ~2 million deaths.

In France, incidence fell to ~382 cases per 100,000 in 2022 after peaking during COVID-19, proving how system resilience saves lives.

Maternal sepsis remains a critical challenge: 13.16 cases per 10,000 pregnancies, with the highest rates in Africa.

These figures highlight a clear truth: sepsis is preventable, yet disparities persist—especially in low- and middle-income countries.

At DAI Fleming Fund Pakistan, we are strengthening AMR surveillance, diagnostics, and antimicrobial stewardship—vital steps to reduce infection risks, improve early recognition, and save lives.

💡 Together, let’s invest in awareness, timely diagnostics, infection prevention, and responsible antimicrobial use.

Every intervention brings us closer to a world where fewer lives are lost to sepsis.

📖✨ International Literacy Day 2025 ✨📖
This year’s theme, “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era,” reminds us that literacy goes beyond reading and writing—it’s also about understanding and applying knowledge in today’s digital world. 🌍💻
At the Fleming Fund Country Grant Pakistan, we believe that scientific literacy is key to tackling one of the greatest health challenges of our time: antimicrobial resistance (AMR). 🦠💊
By strengthening surveillance systems, training laboratories, and promoting responsible use of antimicrobials, we are enabling health professionals, policymakers, and communities to access, interpret, and act on data that protects lives.
📌 On this Literacy Day, we reaffirm our commitment to building digital and scientific literacy—so that evidence drives action, and knowledge becomes power against AMR.
