From Awareness to Action: How Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Turned AMR Advocacy into a Provincial Movement
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was once driven by isolated efforts—committed individuals, small events, limited reach. That changed when advocacy became anchored in governance.
Through sustained engagement and strategic support, AMR awareness evolved into a province-wide, government-led movement. The institutionalization of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW)—backed by formal DG Health notifications—ensured annual observance across districts, hospitals, MTIs, and universities.
WAAW 2025 marked a turning point:
🔹 Province-wide AMR walks, seminars, stewardship sessions, and community outreach
🔹 Over 8,000 people reached across KP
🔹 Strong political ownership, including a PKR 20 million AMR research grant and steps to integrate AMR into medical education
This shift proves a powerful lesson: when leadership steps in, awareness becomes practice—and practice becomes policy.
KP’s journey shows how coordinated action, empowered institutions, and political commitment can transform AMR from a technical issue into a sustained public health priority.

🌍 International Universal Health Coverage Day | 12 December

Health is a human right — not a privilege.
Yet millions of people around the world still lack access to safe, affordable, and quality healthcare. On Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day, we reaffirm the global call to leave no one behind.

At DAI Fleming Fund Country Grant Pakistan (FFCG), we recognize that strong health systems are the foundation of UHC. But universal coverage cannot be achieved without addressing one of the biggest threats to modern healthcare: Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

💡 AMR undermines the very services UHC seeks to strengthen — from routine surgeries and maternal health care to infection control and treatment of common illnesses. When antibiotics stop working, health equity suffers the most.

Through our One Health approach, FFCG is contributing to Pakistan’s UHC goals by:

🔬 Strengthening laboratory capacities across human, animal, and environmental health
📊 Supporting robust AMR surveillance systems
🤝 Training health professionals to improve diagnostic quality
📢 Promoting responsible use of antimicrobials
👥 Enhancing coordination between national and provincial health stakeholders

Achieving UHC means ensuring that every person — regardless of gender, geography, or income — can access life-saving care without financial hardship. Tackling AMR is essential to protecting these services today and safeguarding them for future generations.

On this UHC Day, we reaffirm our commitment to resilient health systems, evidence-based action, and a healthier, safer Pakistan.

🌍 Human Rights Day | 10 December 2025

Access to safe, effective, and affordable treatment is a fundamental human right. Yet, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens this right by making common infections harder—and sometimes impossible—to treat.

At DAI Fleming Fund Country Grant Pakistan, we are working to strengthen surveillance, enhance laboratory systems, and promote the responsible use of antibiotics—so that everyone can access life-saving care when they need it.

Protecting human rights means safeguarding the power of medicines. Together, we can curb AMR and build a healthier, more equitable future for all.

World AIDS Day 2025 — “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response”

Today, on 1 December 2025, the global health community unites to mark World AIDS Day under a powerful theme: “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response.”

This year’s message confronts a difficult truth — funding cuts, system shocks, and reduced support threaten decades of hard-won progress against HIV. Yet it also honours the extraordinary resilience of communities, frontline workers, laboratories, and networks who continue to stand firm in the fight against HIV.

At the Fleming Fund Country Grant Pakistan, our mission to strengthen health systems through a One Health approach — including antimicrobial resistance (AMR), laboratory biosafety, infection prevention and control (IPC), and surveillance — is more critical than ever.
A strong, integrated health system is the foundation for sustaining HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care, especially in times of disruption.

What We Do — and Why It Matters

Strengthening laboratory biosafety and quality systems across human and animal health, helping safeguard diagnostic services that support HIV care and broader public health.

Supporting data-driven surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, and AMU/AMC monitoring, reinforcing regulatory systems and supply chain integrity for infectious disease control.

Building workforce and institutional capacity through training, governance strengthening, and standardized procedures, contributing to resilient systems that can uphold essential HIV services even in crises.

Our Call to Action on World AIDS Day

Today, let’s collectively commit to:

Protecting access to essential HIV services, especially for marginalized and vulnerable communities.

Investing in resilient health systems that integrate antimicrobial stewardship, IPC, and strong laboratory capacity — because health security and HIV response go hand in hand.

Upholding equity, dignity, and human rights for all, challenging stigma, discrimination, and barriers to care.

Standing with communities and health workers, supporting their ability to adapt, innovate, and sustain services despite constraints.

Ending AIDS is possible.
But it requires that we transform disruption into opportunity — through solidarity, multisectoral action, and sustained commitment.

📢 World AMR Awareness Week 2025 | Together Against Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most urgent health threats of our time—silently impacting our health systems, our food security, and our future. As antibiotics lose their effectiveness, even common infections can become life-threatening.

In this video, Dr. Qadeer, Team Lead of the Fleming Fund Country Grant Pakistan, highlights how FFCGP is working closely with the Government of Pakistan, NIH, provincial departments, and partners like WHO to strengthen AMR surveillance nationwide.

Over the past year, we have:
✅ Upgraded and renovated microbiology laboratories
✅ Provided advanced diagnostic equipment
✅ Trained hundreds across human health, animal health, and aquaculture
✅ Improved data quality for evidence-based decision-making
✅ Strengthened One Health collaboration to protect communities

Our goal is simple but critical: preserve the power of life-saving antibiotics for future generations.

As we observe World AMR Awareness Week 2025, we call on everyone—clinicians, veterinarians, pharmacists, farmers, and the public—to use antimicrobials responsibly.

Awareness is the first step. Action must follow.
Together, we can build a healthier, safer Pakistan.
