Sometimes the bravest thing you’ll do all week… is just show up.

Show up tired.
Show up anxious.
Show up with a heart so heavy you don’t know how you’re even functioning.
But still — you show up.
For yourself.

That’s what my client did.

She said along the lines of, Honestly, I was planning to end therapy after this session. I just didn’t have the energy. But after talking to you… I feel lighter. I feel hopeful. I want to stay.

This is for every person who looks "high-functioning" on the outside but is breaking in silence inside.
Who feels guilty for feeling low.

“Why can’t I rest peacefully — even when there’s nothing to do?”

I hear this in therapy all the time — and maybe it’s your experience too.

Here’s what I want you to know:

You’re not “bad at resting.”

You just weren’t taught how to feel safe without proving your worth every second.

When your nervous system has been running on alert for years, even stillness feels unsafe.

That’s not your fault. It’s a protective pattern you learned to survive.

But here’s what you can try to gently rewire that:

🌿 Two small ways to feel safer in rest:

1. Micro-rest moments:
Instead of waiting for a perfect 2-hour block, give yourself 3-minute guilt-free pauses.
No phone. No self-judgment. Just a breath, a sip of water, or looking out the window.
(Yes, it counts.)

2. Shift the inner story:

When guilt creeps in, whisper:
“Rest isn’t lazy. It’s medicine for my tired brain.”
Say it until your body starts to believe it.

Because you deserve to rest.
Not when everything is done.
Not when you’ve “earned” it.

Perfectionism doesn’t just appear out of nowhere — it’s a learned survival mechanism.

So let’s trace it back a bit:

✔ When did you first feel like you had to be perfect?

Was it school? Family expectations? A time when you were rewarded for overworking?

✔ What belief do you hold about success?

e.g., “Only perfect people succeed” vs. “Effort matters more than perfection.”

✔ If you weren’t perfect, what are you afraid might happen?

Failure? Disappointment? Losing control?

💡 Mini-Insight: The goal here isn’t to “blame” anyone but to understand that your perfectionism was once a useful tool—but now? It’s becoming a weight.
