Types of Cerebral Palsy (CP)
Cerebral palsy is classified based on the type of movement disorder involved:
1️⃣ Spastic Cerebral Palsy (Most Common)
Stiff, tight muscles (spasticity)
Difficulty with smooth movements
May affect one side (hemiplegia), both legs (diplegia), or all four limbs (quadriplegia)
2️⃣ Dyskinetic (Athetoid) Cerebral Palsy
Involuntary, uncontrolled movements
Fluctuating muscle tone (too tight or too loose)
Difficulty with posture and coordination
3️⃣ Ataxic Cerebral Palsy
Problems with balance and depth perception
Unsteady walking
Poor coordination
4️⃣ Mixed Cerebral Palsy
Combination of two or more types (commonly spastic + dyskinetic)
✅ Goals of Physiotherapy in CP
Improve mobility, balance, and coordination
Enhance muscle strength and joint flexibility
Reduce spasticity and stiffness through manual therapy & stretching
Promote independence in daily activities
Prevent secondary complications such as contractures and deformities
✅ Treatment Approaches
Neurodevelopmental Therapy (NDT): Encourages normal movement patterns
Strength & Balance Training: Builds control for walking and posture
Kinesio Taping & Orthotics: Support weak muscles and improve alignment
Task-Oriented Exercises: Improve functional skills for everyday life
Family Education & Home Programs: Empower caregivers for long-term support
🌟 With consistent therapy and personalized care, children and adults with CP can achieve greater independence, improved mobility, and enhanced quality of life.
