Before You Say Yes to Surgery — Ask These Questions
Surgery can be life-changing.
For a child, it can also be life-long.
Before you agree to any operation for your child, pause—and ask:
1. Does my child really need surgery right now?
Not every condition requires immediate surgery. Timing matters, especially in children.
2. Is this surgeon specifically trained to operate on children?
Children are not small adults. Pediatric anatomy, healing, and long-term growth must be respected.
3. How many times has this surgeon performed this exact procedure successfully in children?
Experience is not about years—it is about repetition and outcomes.
4. What happens if this surgery is delayed or done incorrectly?
Some mistakes are not easily corrected later and make future surgery harder.
5. What are the long-term risks, not just the immediate ones?
Scarring, recurrence, fertility issues, and functional problems may appear years later.
6. What will recovery look like for my child—not for an adult?
Pain control, daycare discharge, feeding, activity and emotional comfort matter.
7. Who will manage complications or follow-up if something goes wrong?
Good surgery does not end in the operating room.
Many revision surgeries I see are not due to “bad luck,”
but due to poor initial decisions.
