Brief Introduction to Urology across the globe and Pakistan

Urological conditions are ancient and literature is evident about bladder stones in more than 5000 year’s old mummies, pictorial atlases about maneuvers and instruments for stone removal. Professor Jean Casimir Felix Guyon was the first French general surgeon recognized as genitourinary surgeon in 1890. In the year 1900, American surgeons stated to group as genitourinary surgeons and in early 1902, Dr. Ramon Guiteras officially made the American Urology Association (AUA). While in year 1920, Dr. James C. McClelland proposed the formation of Canadian urology association and eventually in year 1945 Canadian Urological Association (CUA) was officially inaugurated under presidency of Dr. Robin Pearse. In same year, Mr Ronald Ogier Ward conceptualized and established The British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) with objective of promoting higher standard of practice in urology. In just 50 years with the evolution of imaging technology, endoscopic instruments and increasing interest of surgeon’s towards urological conditions, surgeons’ started to choose urology as career. Urological Society of India (USI) started their meetings initially as sub-division of surgery and later on recognized as separate subspecialty in 1961. PAUS:
While in Pakistan, in late fifties and early sixties there were only two hospitals having department of genitourinary surgery run under the general surgeons. In Late 1980s, College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) recognized urology as separate subspecialty and fellowship program. In year 1997, Professor Farrakh Khan organized the meeting with young and senior surgeons practicing urology and vowed for the Urological Association. In year 1998, Pakistan Association of Urology Surgeons (PAUS) had first recognized meeting at Lahore. In the year 2001 PAUS meeting held in Karachi, the constitution was revised and the chapters were generated. Till now more than dozen national and international chapters are prospering with more than 700 members nationwide. In year 2002, PAUS annual meeting was hosted by Lahore, the term UROCON was adopted and then onward UROCON is a regular annual event organized in Pakistan. PAUS Hyderabad Chapter:
In terms of Hyderabad chapter, it remained active under the names of Professor Shahzad Laghari, Professor Shafique ur Rehman Memon and from the 2019 under the name of Dr Javed Altaf Jat. With comprehensive and well organized team members, PAUS Hyderabad chapter was able to successfully carry out the UROCON 2020.
