DBT stands for dialectical behavioural therapy and is often my preferred approach to use with clients struggling with a wide variety of mental health struggles such as anxiety, relationship issues, impulsivity, a lack of fulfilment, inability to regulate emotions, struggling with discipline and fear of attachment amongst others. I feel like this often much nuanced and well rounded as compared to CBT because it accounts for many different aspects of a person’s struggle and aims to build skills that once learnt can be a lifelong hack to understanding emotions and regulating your mental health for the better. These skills consist of 4 main components that is Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness and Distress Tolerance. These are best learnt in a therapeutic group setting and in personal one on one therapy. Research strongly supports DBT and its outcomes in improving mental health challenges and struggles that may seem insurmountable.

It’s always interesting to note that every person is a world of idiosyncrasies. The way they look at the world through their eyes and make sense of their experiences while deriving a meaning is essentially very different to another. It’s important to understand how our unconscious dictates those meanings to better understand relationships, communicate and come to a shared meaning.

Guilt is a powerful emotion. It is a sign of an active conscious, the acceptance that you have made a mistake. When we feel regret for any of our actions, we often belittle ourselves as worthless and bad and may feel like punishing ourselves. Guilt can be the way for positive growth, but can also hold us back if we’re unable to make amends or process it properly.

Research shows that about one third of millennials experience financial trauma. It is defined as the physical, emotional, and cognitive deficits people experience when they cannot cope with either abrupt financial loss or the chronic stress of having inadequate financial resources.

Events such as unemployment, unstable income, chronic debt, bankruptcies, lawsuits etc and similar circumstances can overwhelm a person and become traumatic. It is important to note that unfortunately, we live in a society which perpetuates injustice and discriminates on the basis of social classes, gender, race etc. Therefore, for many people, the opportunities are limited to improve their situation financially and their financial traumas stem from this social injustice.

Family therapy is a type of psychotherapy designed to help families with issues that affect their mental health and functioning.

Whenever a family goes through any situation that causes stress, grief, anger or conflict, for example the loss of another family member, an accident, or financial problems, family therapy is very useful. It can help family members understand one another better and learn coping skills to bring them closer together. In case of troubled relationships with a partner, children or other family members, it can also help family members improve their communication and resolve conflicts.

If you and your family are struggling with anything that affects your mental health as a family, don’t hesitate in reaching out to a therapist who can help you improve your home environment, your relationships and your mental well being.

Establishing boundaries means creating rules and limits with other people. It is of utmost importance to have personal boundaries in any kind of a relationship for it to be a healthy relationship, be it professional or personal.
Setting personal boundaries in relationships is important because it allows you to establish how you want others to behave around you. These boundaries also define responsibilities and help partners to communicate and work together more effectively. It allows people to respect each other as well as their opinions and perspectives, take permission and ensure that the other person feels comfortable.

Not being able to set healthy boundaries can be related to common issues like low self-esteem, needing approval from others, learned helplessness or the fear of being rejected or criticized. If you’re not used to asserting your boundaries, it might seem a little daunting at first but it’s completely healthy and valid. Once you practice doing it, it will definitely improve your overall mental well being. If you still struggle with it, you can always reach out for therapy to help you with it.

Here are 6 ways of practicing self-acceptance

Self-acceptance means accepting yourself and all your traits exactly as they are, whether they are positive or negative. Research shows that self-acceptance is fundamental for overall mental health and well-being.

Most people develop their self-esteem, in part, from others appreciating them and how they’re treated by them, their relationships and life events which often influences how readily they accept themselves. Self-acceptance gives you more confidence in yourself, makes you less vulnerable to criticism and thus increases your mental well being.
