Hahnemann Hero and Heretic?
What were the consequences of Hahnemann's pioneering work as the 'Luther of Medicine?' For patients it seems he soon became something of a hero. In both Leipzig (1812-21) and Koethen (1821-35) he attracted patients into a thriving medical practice. His Casebooks show that whole families would willingly surrender themselves to his inquisitorial style of medical consultation. The results and numbers of patients speak volumes for his skills as a successful doctor. And in Paris (1835-43), and busier than ever, even in his twilight years, he reputedly 'made a fortune' treating mostly rich and famous clients from all over Europe, Russia and the Americas.

To what extent that success can be attributed to his wife and her many connections in the upper echelons of French society is hard to say. Some homeopaths believe she was very materialistic and as evidence they point to her endless haggling with the Boenninghausen family over the 6th Organon and other documents which she refused to release for years and only then at the highest price obtainable.
However, for the rest of the medical profession his apparent success was a very different story. All the leading physicians, professors and medical faculties attacked him as a dangerous heretic. Having cut a bold new medical path he had also in the process thrown overboard centuries of medical theory and methods. Leading physicians of the old school couldn't get into print fast enough to denounce the impostor!

They dismissed his ideas and methods as nonsensical quackery, attacking especially the tiny doses and his legally questionable methods of making his own medicines. He had to pay a high price for being a rebel and an iconoclast, for having the audacity to attempt a root and branch reform of medicine. That price included being labelled a quack, a charlatan and being denounced and ostracised by his fellow physicians and thus being stigmatised as
