Dear Colleagues,
Since 1976, June 5th has been commemorated as World Environment Day, serving as a critical reminder of the consequences of our actions toward the environment. When our interaction with nature lacks responsibility, the impact is not just ecological—it is humanitarian, economic, and deeply personal.
This year’s global theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” calls attention to a crisis that is choking our planet. Over 400 million tons of plastic waste are produced annually, and less than 10% is recycled. The rest finds its way into our water, air, and food systems—posing a silent yet severe threat to ecosystems and public health.
For Pakistan, the dangers of environmental neglect are neither distant nor hypothetical. In April and May of this year, Karachi experienced a record-breaking heatwave, endangering lives and overwhelming health services. Islamabad was hit by a rare and violent hailstorm, while Punjab witnessed destructive storms, disrupting livelihoods and infrastructure. These aren’t isolated incidents—they are symptoms of a larger climate emergency.
Recent reports from international bodies such as the Global Climate Risk Index by Germanwatch and the Notre Dame Global Adaptation Initiative (ND-GAIN) have consistently ranked Pakistan among the top 10 countries most vulnerable to climate change. Factors such as weak infrastructure, high population density, dependence on agriculture, and lack of climate resilience mechanisms make our country particularly exposed to extreme weather events, resource scarcity, and rising health risks.
At Karwan-e-Hayat, we are committed to doing our part. Our environmental initiatives continue to focus on:
Conserving water and energy in our operations
Minimizing and responsibly managing waste
Promoting the principles of sustainability across the healthcare sector
This World Environment Day, I invite each of you to take personal responsibility through the 5 Rs of sustainable living:
Refuse unnecessary plastic use
Reduce consumption and waste
Reuse materials wherever possible
Recycle diligently
Ensure Responsible disposal of waste
Let us not underestimate the power of small actions. Let us also educate and empower our younger generation, who will be the torchbearers of tomorrow’s environmental stewardship.
Climate change is no longer a future threat—it is a present crisis. But with informed action, committed leadership, and collective resolve, we can still shape a livable, healthier planet.
