A cracked heel is a common foot problem. It occurs when dry, thick skin on the bottom of your heels cracks and splits.

Causes of Cracked heels:
▪︎ Cracked heels are more common during the winter months when humidity is low and the outdoor temperature is low.
▪︎ Deficiency of Vitamin C and B
▪︎ Fungal skin infections
▪︎ Medical condtions eg. diabetes, diabetic neuropathy, hypothyroidism or psoriasis
▪︎ Wearing open-heel shoes such as thongs or sandals.
▪︎ Barefoot walking
▪︎ Indoor heating which reduces indoor humidity and dries out skin
▪︎ Hot baths or showers that dry out skin.

Treatment:
▪︎ Apply a heavier, oil-based cream or petroleum jelly (Vaseline), then slip on a pair of thin cotton socks at bedtime to help create a protective barrier on the surface of the skin to moisturise dry skin.
▪︎ Coconut oil is a great at-home remedy for dry skin as it contains several ingredients that can help improve moisture retention. It also contains antibacterial properties, which can aid in preventing infection if you happen to have severely cracked heels.
