A meniscus knee injury involves damage to the meniscus, a crescent-shaped cartilage located in the knee joint. The meniscus acts as a cushion and stabilizer, helping to absorb shock and reduce friction between the thigh bone (femur) and the shin bone (tibia). There are two menisci in each knee: the medial meniscus on the inner side and the lateral meniscus on the outer side. Injuries to these structures often occur due to twisting or rotating motions, especially when bearing weight. Common causes include sports activities, sudden changes in direction, or knee trauma.
