A Historic Teachers’ Day Celebration at NICH – 11th October 2025

Honouring Mentors on Teachers’ Day

It was a proud and emotional moment to celebrate Teachers’ Day at the National Institute of Child Health (NICH), Karachi. The event marked a significant milestone — the first-ever Teachers’ Day celebration in NICH’s history, held with great respect and love for the mentors and senior doctors who have dedicated their lives to serving and guiding generations in the field of paediatrics.

This special celebration was an initiative of Dr. Bader-u-Nisa Sodhar, Associate Professor and Head of Medical Unit-III, NICH/JSMU. Her heartfelt effort to honour the respected teachers who completed their services at NICH made this occasion truly memorable.

The event was not merely a celebration — it was a heartfelt tribute to all the mentors who have shaped the spirit of NICH and continue to inspire generations of healthcare professionals.
In an especially emotional moment, Dr. Sodhar fondly remembered the founder of NICH, Dr. Razia Rahmatullah, who laid the foundation of this great institution. As a tribute to her visionary leadership, Dr. Sodhar placed her portrait on the wall in front of the NICH Auditorium, commemorating her pioneering vision and lifelong dedication.

Dr. Sodhar not only paid tribute to her mentors at NICH but also invited her teachers from Larkana, where she completed her house job, as well as her colleagues and friends who trained alongside her during her postgraduate years at NICH. This thoughtful gesture transformed the event into a beautiful gathering of respect, love, and professional unity — a true celebration of lifelong mentorship and gratitude.

The event was graced by the esteemed presence of:
Prof. Zeenat Isani (Former Director, NICH)
Prof. Syed Jamal Raza (Former Director, NICH)
Prof. Khalid Mahmood
Prof. Jamshed Akhter
Prof. Mashal Khan
Dr. Sidiqa Ibrahim
Dr. Yasmeen Qazi
Dr. Raj Kumar, Dr. Furqan, Dr. Asif Ali Khan, Dr. Kanwer Ahsan, Prof. Taj Muhammad Lagari, Dr. Mukhtiar Hussain Bhayo (WHO)
Prof. Khursheed Ahmad Abbasi, Prof. Sikandar Ali Mughal, Dr. Zulfiqar Ali Rahoojo, and Dr. Saeed Memon from Larkana
Ms. Afshan Nazli, Former Principal and CNS, College of Nursing, NICH.
The event was beautifully moderated by Dr. Faiqa Hassan and attended by all faculty members, postgraduate trainees, and Ms. Shabana Nazir, Principal, College of Nursing, along with the teaching faculty and nursing students. Their presence added immense honour and inspiration to the celebration.

Heartfelt gratitude to all the mentors for their lifelong dedication, service, and inspiration.
Your teachings continue to illuminate the path for future generations.

As a token of appreciation, shields were presented to all the teachers, while photo frames were gifted to colleagues and friends in recognition of their contributions and lasting impact.

“Every Child’s Life Matters”

A 2.5-year-old child was brought to NICH with a history of swallowing a screw four days earlier. Investigations revealed that the screw was lodged deep in the wall of the second part of the duodenum.

Success Story – Mini-PCNL in a 2-Year-Old at NICH Karachi
We, at NICH successfully performed a Mini-PCNL with DJ stent placement in a 2-year-old, 10 kg child, a known case of common cloaca, and uterine didelphy with previous transverse colostomy.

📌 Right kidney stone: 2cm
📌 Goal: Kidney preservation through minimally invasive surgery

The procedure was completed safely on 13/10/2025, without complications.

💚 Post-op Update:

Child is stable
Oral intake resumed
Urine output adequate
Minimal pain

This case highlights that advanced endourology (Mini-PCNL) can be successfully performed even in very small children in a public sector setup.
