This building was constructed by Defunct KMC and inaugurated as Maternity home by Begum Nusrat Bhutto (the wife of former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Zulfiqar Bhutto, late) on June 13, 1974. This was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. The Honorable Nazim of the City District Government Karachi decided to establish an institute of heart disease. As the main campus of Karachi med
ical and dental college has been established in North Nazimabad, it was decided to establish
Karachi institute of heart diseases in this building after the recommendation of expert survey committee as this place is the most ideal location for such an institute. The Honorable City Nazim laid the foundation stone for the renovation and modification of this building for Karachi institute of heart diseases on January 9, 2004. The main function of the institute is to undertake modern treatment of cardiovascular diseases, carryout research, prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases, undertake training of medical students and nurses both undergraduate and postgraduate level and develops itself into a center of excellence for treatment of cardiovascular diseases. KIHD is 170 beds teaching hospital, including fully equipped Emergency Room, CCU, Medical Wards, Surgical Wards, Private Wards, Intensive Care Unit, Two Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, Two Surgical Theaters, ECHO, ETT and Nuclear Imaging Department, Rehabilitation Center, Research Department and Laboratory for routine investigations.
