An insightful presentation at by Mustafa Mohsin explored “Comparative Risk of Surgical Site Infections in Oral Cancer Surgeries with and Without Free Flap Reconstruction: A Retrospective Study.”

The study highlighted the significant burden of Surgical Site Infections (SSI) in oral cavity resections—procedures inherently classified as clean-contaminated, with infection rates reported as high as 68% without prophylaxis, and 26–48% even with antibiotic use in free flap reconstructions.

Analyzing a cohort of 233 patients, the findings revealed:
• Overall SSI rate: 14.1%
• Higher unadjusted SSI rates observed in free flap reconstructions
• Longer hospital stay associated with higher infection rates

An insightful presentation at by Rutbaa Ayaz Shaikh explored “Comparative Efficacy of Surgical Versus Medical Management in Brain Abscesses: A Systematic Review.”

The study reviewed evidence from PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library, comparing surgical interventions (aspiration, drainage, excision, craniotomy) with medical management (antibiotics ± corticosteroids) across diverse patient populations.

Key findings from 849 patients across 3 studies revealed:
• Mortality rate: 19.1%
• Treatment failure: 21–36%
• Unfavorable outcomes: 21–46%
• Higher failure rates observed with nonoperative management

The study concluded that while surgical management improves disease resolution, early surgical intervention may significantly reduce treatment failure in selected patients. In contrast, reliance on medical management alone can lead to delayed surgery and poorer outcomes.

The presentation also highlighted important limitations, including lack of RCTs and variability in treatment approaches, emphasizing the need for more robust, standardized research in this domain.
