As a practicing clinical psychologist, I often hear questions about the difference between distress and a disorder, and how to determine when a disturbance requires immediate action.

I'd like to address this important topic by highlighting some key points based on my expertise and experience:

Distress refers to the emotional or psychological suffering we experience in response to challenging situations. It is often temporary and can be managed with coping strategies. In contrast, a disorder is a more persistent and pervasive condition that significantly impairs daily functioning and well-being.

> How distress can evolve into a disorder? When distress begins to affect key areas of an individual's life, such as their social interactions, personal identity, and family relationships, it can be indicative of a more serious issue.

If distress is affecting these crucial aspects of life, it’s important to seek professional help to assess and address the issue effectively. Early intervention can prevent further deterioration and improve overall well-being.

WHAT IS THERAPY ?

IT IS NOTHING FANCY !

Therapy, in simple terms, is a process where a trained professional (therapist or counselor) helps a person work through problems, emotions, or challenges they are facing in their life. It's a supportive environment where you can talk openly and confidentially about your thoughts and feelings.

The goal is usually to understand yourself better, find solutions to problems, develop coping skills, and improve your overall well-being. Therapists use different techniques and approaches depending on your needs, but the focus is always on helping you feel better and live a more fulfilling life.

Sometimes it's just about Catharis (vent out to someone who is nonjudgemental in listening to you and also while treating you).

Sometimes it is a lot organized and structured.

Sometimes its Abstract.

You can convey whatever suits you and what does not!


WHAT TO DO IN THERAPY ?

Just say your mind out loud to the therapist and leave the rest . If you do not see any progress bring it in the session. There is no harm confronting it to your psychologist that you do not see any difference in your previous and current state. You are paying for it, better make it worthwhile.

If you are not comfortable with the therapist, Speak out. Its better to state than to ghost your therapist.

Anything and everything you feel throughout your sessions, where a good or a bad experience STATE IT, TALK ABOUT IT, COMMUNICATE IT TO THE THERAPIST.

Even if you feel like Leaving, talk about it.

Unclosed and unfinished businesses are worse than the actual misery.

People do this in a variety of ways, from using distraction (i.e. watching TV), or numbing (through drugs and alcohol), to overeating or controlling food intake.

Dont suppress your emotions, SEEK HELP TO EXPLORE THEM, EMBRACE YOUR EMOTIONS.

Here are a few stepping stones that can help you achieve your goals:
1. Manage your time.
2. Figure out your priorities.
3. Break the habit of putting things off.
4. Stop waiting for the perfect time, create it instead.
5. Remember that negative experiences happen because we need them to.
Self-confidence is an attitude about your skills and abilities. It means you accept and trust yourself and have a sense of control in your life. You know your strengths and weaknesses well and have a positive view of yourself. You set realistic expectations and goals, communicate assertively, and can handle criticism.
The good news is that confidence is not a personality trait that we're either born with or without; it's a skill that can be acquired with practice and effort.

Trauma is not just about loosing someone . Its more than that
Trauma is Abuse , Neglect , Hate , Being bullied , Ignorance , Voilence , change in circumstances and Threats . It keeps our brain centres like amgdala and hippocampus activated all the time.

Early traumatic experiences can lead to Su***de , Substance Abuse , not being emotionally regulated , dissociation and other mental health conditions.

Adults may display sleep problems, increased agitation, hypervigilance, isolation or withdrawal, and increased use of alcohol or drugs. Older adults may exhibit increased withdrawal and isolation, reluctance to leave home, worsening of chronic illnesses, confusion, depression, and fear.

Seek Help if you feel you are in that cycle of Trauma . Dont convert trauma into generational trauma.
