Teaching children about family members like Mama, Baba, brother, and sister can be made fun and interactive with a fixing board. As children open hooks and reveal pictures, they practice naming and identifying family members, which supports language development and social understanding.

This activity also improves attention, fine motor skills, and engagement, making learning meaningful through play. Parents can sit with the child, model the words, and encourage them to repeat and identify each family member.

Simple play activities like this help children learn functional language and build connections with their everyday world.

This tool looks simple… but it’s doing a lot of developmental heavy lifting in session.

Here’s why we use it 👇

🧠 1. Hand-Eye Coordination

Child has to visually locate the peg and accurately hit it.
That eye + hand teamwork = stronger visual-motor integration (super important for writing later).

💪 2. Upper Limb Strength

Repeated hammering builds:
• Shoulder stability
• Wrist strength
• Hand muscles

All of this supports pencil grip and fine motor control.

✋ 3. Bilateral Coordination

One hand stabilizes the bench while the other hand hammers.
That “two hands doing different jobs” skill is HUGE for:
• Cutting with scissors
• Buttoning
• Writing

🎯 4. Motor Planning

The child has to figure out:
• How hard to hit
• Where to aim
• How to adjust when it misses

That’s praxis in action.

🧩 5. Attention & Impulse Control

They must:
• Wait
• Aim
• Control force

It’s amazing for kids who struggle with regulation or sensory seeking.

🌈 6. Color Recognition & Matching

You can turn it into:
• “Hit all the red ones”
• Pattern imitation
• Counting game

Boom — cognitive goals achieved.

💥 7. Sensory Input

Hammering gives deep proprioceptive input (very regulating for sensory seekers).

🎶 Xylophone Activities for Speech Development at Home

1️⃣ Syllable Tapping

Tap once for each syllable in a word.
Ba-na-na → 3 taps
Ap-ple → 2 taps

This helps children understand how words are broken into smaller sound parts, improving clarity and pronunciation.

2️⃣ Copy My Sound

Tap a simple pattern (tap–tap–pause–tap).
Ask your child to copy it.
Then say a word and have them repeat it.

This builds listening skills, auditory memory, and imitation — all important for speech development.

3️⃣ Loud & Soft Sounds

Tap softly and say a quiet sound.
Tap loudly and say a strong sound.

This improves voice control, breath support, and sound awareness.

4️⃣ Question vs Statement Game

Play a high note and ask a question.
Play a low note and say a statement.

This helps children learn natural speech intonation and conversational patterns.

5️⃣ Emotion Music

Ask your child to “play happy,” “play sad,” or “play angry.”
Then say a sentence using that feeling.

This supports emotional expression and expressive language skills.

Research suggests that newborn babies can clearly see only high-contrast colours like black, white, and grey during the first few months of life. 👶🤍🖤

Currently using these high-contrast flashcards by 🤍🖤

Using high-contrast flashcards during this crucial period helps provide the visual stimulation babies need for healthy eye and brain development.

Black and white stimulation cards support:
• Visual focus
• Tracking skills
• Attention development

They can be used during tummy time, placed in the baby’s room, or safely hung near the crib for short, supervised viewing sessions.

We use a block sorter in therapy because it supports multiple developmental areas at the same time:

• Builds problem-solving skills – children learn trial and error
• Improves fine motor control – grasping, releasing, and wrist movement
• Enhances visual-perceptual skills – matching shapes, sizes, and colors
• Supports attention & focus – completing a structured task
• Encourages language development – naming shapes, colors, and actions
• Promotes emotional regulation – success builds confidence and patience
