Blood Fat Links Found Between Heart Risk and Alzheimer’s

A study analyzing data from the long-running Framingham Heart Study has found that certain blood fats associated with heart disease also correlate with the risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

Small dense LDL cholesterol, a harmful lipid type, was linked to a 21% increased risk of Alzheimer’s for each standard deviation increase in concentration.

However, higher levels of ApoB48—a marker for dietary fat transport—were linked to a 22% reduction in risk.

In an unexpected twist, individuals with the lowest HDL ("good") cholesterol levels were 44% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those with higher levels.

These results challenge conventional assumptions about "good" and "bad" fats in the context of brain health.

The study highlights the potential of lipid biomarkers in shaping new approaches to Alzheimer’s prevention.
