We are finally starting Summer Art Therapy classes!!🧠 How Art Therapy Supports Speech and Expression:
1. Stimulates Brain Regions Linked to Language
• Creating art requires using imagination, emotion, visual thinking, language and logic.
2. Reduces Anxiety and Emotional Barriers
• Many speech issues are tied to anxiety or trauma.
• Art allows a person to express emotions nonverbally, reducing inner pressure and creating a safe space that can make verbal expression easier over time.
3. Builds Confidence and Self-Expression
• Through painting, individuals can symbolically represent thoughts and feelings that may be hard to express with words.
• This process can strengthen identity and empower someone to start putting words to their feelings, improving vocabulary and communication over time.
4. Improves Fine Motor Skills Needed for Speech
• Painting involves fine motor control, which can indirectly support the oral-motor coordination used in speaking.
• This is particularly helpful for children with speech motor planning difficulties.
5. Encourages Storytelling and Language Use
• Art often leads to narration, a child may describe what they’re painting, explain the story behind the image, or talk about the feelings represented.
• This encourages language development, especially in a warm & therapeutic setting like Speech Matters!
6. Supports People with Autism or Selective Mutism
• For individuals who find spoken communication overwhelming or inaccessible, art therapy becomes a bridge.
• Over time, it can be a stepping stone to verbal interaction, especially when combined with speech therapy.
