What is Keratoconus?
Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition where the normally round cornea becomes thin and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape. This irregular shape prevents light from focusing properly on the retina, leading to distorted and blurry vision. It usually starts during the teenage years or early adulthood and may progress over time.
How is Keratoconus a Sight-Threatening Condition?
As keratoconus advances, the cornea becomes thin and irregular, causing severe visual distortion that glasses cannot correct. In advanced cases, scarring and extreme thinning of the cornea may occur, which can significantly impair vision and potentially lead to legal blindness if left untreated. The irregular corneal surface creates high levels of astigmatism and light scatter, making daily activities like reading, driving, or using a computer extremely difficult.
Effective Treatment of Keratoconus with Scleral Contact Lenses
Scleral contact lenses are one of the most effective non-surgical treatments for keratoconus. Unlike regular contact lenses, scleral lenses vault over the irregular cornea and rest on the sclera , creating a smooth optical surface. This provides clear, stable vision and exceptional comfort, even for advanced cases.
Additionally, the fluid reservoir between the lens and cornea keeps the eye hydrated and protected. Scleral lenses not only improve vision but also delay or eliminate the need for surgical interventions like corneal transplants.
