A cochlear implant was successfully performed by Dr. Irshad Malik at Omer hospital and cardiac center for a patient with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss, unresponsive to conventional amplification. The procedure was carried out under general anesthesia with precise technique. Intraoperative impedance and neural response telemetry (NRT) confirmed optimal electrode placement and device function. The patient had a smooth post-operative course and was discharged in stable condition.

Successful Cochlear Implant Surgery Performed at Allama Iqbal Medical College TODAY / Jinnah Hospital, Lahore
Patient presented with bilateral severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss, confirmed on audiological assessment ( PTA). The child had no response to conventional hearing aids and showed delayed speech and language development. Imaging (CT/MRI) showed normal inner ear anatomy.

Cochlear implant surgery was successfully performed to provide access to sound and support language development. Postoperative recovery was uneventful. Patient will undergo device activation and auditory-verbal therapy for optimal outcomes.

Performed by Dr.Muhmmad Irshad Malik and his team, this surgery highlights how advanced ENT procedures can now be executed successfully even in public sector setups — ensuring quality care reaches those who need it most.

Vocal Cord Polyp Excision | Restoring the Voice

Microsurgical removal of a vocal cord polyp performed under general anesthesia using a laryngoscope and operating microscope.

Historic Milestone: First Cochlear Implant Surgery at Jinnah Hospital, Lahore

ALHAMDULILLAH! A groundbreaking achievement in surgical excellence has been reached at Jinnah Hospital, Lahore, where the ENT Department successfully performed its first-ever cochlear implant surgery on a five-year-old child with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss.

According to a WHO survey (2018), 10% of Pakistan's population suffers from congenital deafness, highlighting the urgent need for effective healthcare solutions. Cochlear implantation has emerged as a well-established means of auditory rehabilitation for severely to profoundly deaf individuals. However, financial constraints have long limited the implementation of cochlear implant programs in the public sector.

This remarkable success was made possible through the dedication of a skilled surgical team led by Prof. Dr. Irshad Malik (HOD ENT Unit 1, Jinnah Hospital, Lahore), with the valuable assistance of Brig. Dr. Shehzad, along with the support of his colleagues, diligent paramedical staff, and hospital administration. Special gratitude to Prof. Asghar Naqi, Principal AIMC, for his invaluable leadership in facilitating this achievement.

This historic moment marks the beginning of a dedicated cochlear implant program, promising to bring the gift of hearing to many more patients in the future. Otoscopic view of central tympanic membrane perforation in a patient with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). The perforation is located in the pars tensa, with evidence of mucosal changes and discharge.

Ear discharge (mucoid/purulent, non-foul smelling)

Hearing loss (conductive)

No pain unless secondary infection

No vertigo (unless complications develop)
