PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP ON *BASICS OF MECHANICAL VENTILATION AND VENTILATORY STRATEGIES FOR ARDS PATIENT*

A pre conference workshop on basics of mechanical ventilation and ventilatory strategies for ARDS was organised by Prof Dr Muzamil Hussain, HOD anesthesia dept and Prof.Dr. Liaqat Ali, Professor of Anaesthesia SGRH.
The esteemed Vice Chancellor, FJMU , Tamgha e Imtiaz & Presidential Pride of Performance Prof. Dr. Khalid Masud Gondal, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. He gave his valuable advice to doctors about the importance of this workshop. He appreciated the efforts of Anaesthesia Dept. in arranging hands on workshops for better training of students and doctors.

32 participants from anaesthesia dept attended the workshop.
There were 3 hands-on stations,

Station 1, Oxygen Delivery Devices facilitated by Dr. Sheikh Ziarat Ali Assistant Professor Anaesthesia Dept. SGRH.

Station 2, Non Invasive Ventilation facilitated by Prof. Dr. Muzamil Hussain (HOD Anaesthesia dept.) and Dr.Tauseef Ahmad (SR)

Station 3, Invasive Ventilation facilitated by Prof. Dr. Liaqat Ali (Professor Anaesthesia Dept.) and Dr. Fariha (SR).

Material and pretest regarding workshop was shared one day before the workshop.

After the workshop there was a post test and feedback proforma that was shared with the participants to be filled.

WORLD ANAESTHESIA DAY CELEBRATION'23!

Every year on 16th October all over the world anaesthesia providers celebrate their profession and have a bit of fun whilst doing it.

World Anaesthesia Day commemorates the birth of anaesthesia on 16th October 1846. When doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital demonstrated the use of ether for the first time on a patient. In doing so they changed surgery forever, proving it was possible for patients to undergo surgery without the torture of pain previously associated with it.

The Anaesthesia Dept. SGRH also celebrated WORLD ANAESTHESIA DAY on the 16th of Oct'23.

Prof. Dr.Liaqat, Dr.Saamia Yousaf(AP), Dr.Sheikh Ziarat Ali(AP), Dr. Bushra Aijaz(AP) and senior registrars of the department took part in the cake cutting ceremony and gave the post graduates the message of improving patient care and providing safe anaesthesia to the patients.

PRE IMM ASSESSMENT
A quarterly assessment of pre imm post graduate residents was conducted by the anaesthesia dept.SGRH on 26th of September'23.

The topics included:
-Medical gases and their supply sources
-Anaesthesia machine, pressure divisions and safety features
-Flowmeters
-Vapourizers
-Co2 absorber
-Scavenging
-Oxygen delivery devices
-Operating room environment
-Temperature monitoring and hypo/hyperthermia
-Electrical safety, electrocautery, electrocution
-Non CVS monitoring( pulse oximetry, capnogtaphy)
-CVS monitoring( NIBP, CVC)

There were 20 MCQs and 5 SAQs followed by 10 TOACS stations.

The Assessment was supervised by Prof. Dr. Liaqat and the facilitators to the Toacs station included:

Dr Noshin Akram (AP)
Dr Naeem sheikh ( AP)
Dr Tauseef Awan (SR)
Dr Fariha Aslam (SR)

The participants were assessed and thereafter discussed their queries with the facilitators for better understanding of the topics and a clearer concept.

Workshop on BLS/ACLS.

A workshop on BLS and ACLS was conducted by the Department of Anaesthesia SGRH for the House Officers of the department on the 2nd of September'23.

The workshop was supervised by Prof. Dr. Muzamil and Prof. Dr. Liaqat Ali and was facilitated by Senior Registrar, Dr. Tauseef Awan.

The House officers were given basic knowledge about basic life support (BLS) and how to maintain a clear airway and support breathing and circulation in cases of cardiac arrest.

Moreover, they were given hands on practice of delivering chest compressions, securing an advanced airway and the use of AED so that better patient care can be provided in the ICUs and the Operating Rooms.

Conduction of Quarterly PGR Assessment (June'23)

A quarterly assessment of PGRs was conducted on the 2nd of June'23 by the Anaesthesia Dept.SGRH.
The topics of assessment included:

Xray and CT scan interpretation
ECG
ABGs
History taking and examination related to DM, thyroid, Asthma, IHD
Capnography, pulse oximetry, nerve stimulator, a-line, CVC, Applied physics and
Icu topics:
Transport of critically ill, tetanus, brain death, GB syndrome, MG, acute pancreatitis, icu acquired weakness, sepsis, Ards, VAP, snake bite,

There were 30 mcqs which were followed by 10 TOACS stations.

The Examiners of the TOACS stations were: Prof. Dr. Muzamil Hussain (HOD), Prof.Dr.Liaqat, Dr. Saamia Yousaf(AP), Dr.Sheikh Ziarat Ali(AP), Dr.Noshin Akram(AP).

The PGRs were assessed and thereafter had discussions with the examiners regarding their shortcomings and how they could improve their performances in the upcoming exams.

Workshop on Non Cardiovascular Monitoring and Applied Physics.

A workshop on non cardiovascular monitoring and applied physics was conducted on 19th May,2023 by the Department of Anaesthesia SGRH.

The workshop was headed by Head of Department, Prof. Dr. Muzamil Hussain, Prof. Dr. Liaqat Ali and Assistant Professor, Dr. Sheikh Ziarat Ali.

There were 4 stations

Station 1- Applied Physics
Station 2- Pulse oximetry
Station 3- Nerve Stimulator and its application
Station 4- End Tidal CO2 and its interpretation

Senior residents of the department were trained before hand and served as facilitators in the workshop.

The practical applications of monitoring and applied physics and there interpretations were discussed in the workshop. It was a very fruitful and informative session.

The Department of Anaesthesia, is one of the most well reputed and credible department of Sir Gangaram Hospital that provides clinical anaesthetic care, 24 hour specialist intensive care and pain management in pre and post surgical procedures.

At present the Anaesthesia Department FJMU/SGRH is headed by Prof. Dr. Muzamil Hussain. There are two professors, three Assistant Professors, ten Consultants/ Specialists and Twenty four Medical Officers/Women Medical Officers, who help in the smooth running of the department.

Workshop on History Taking and Examination.

A workshop on history taking and examination was conducted by the Department of Anaesthesia SGRH on 5th of May 2023.
The workshop was headed by HOD, Prof. Dr. Muzamil Hussain, Prof. Dr. Liaqat Ali and Assistant Prof. Dr. Sheikh Ziarat Ali.

There were 4 stations each of which targeted a specific disease along with its history taking, examination and relevant investigations.

-Station 1: General Preoperative History taking and Examination .
-Station 2: History taking and examination of a Patient with Asthma undergoing inguinal hernia repair.
-Station 3: History taking and examination of a patient with long standing Diabetes Mellitus on list for Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.
-Station 4: History taking and examination of a patient of Thyroid for thyroidectomy.

Senior residents trained before hand by the professors served as the facilitators.

The post graduate residents were asked to take history and perform the relevant examinations and later on they were told about the shortcomings by the facilitators.

It was a very informative and a profitable session as disease specific history points, examination and relevant investigations with reasoning were discussed with the trainees as part of a structured training programme and for better patient care.

Workshop on ECG Changes.

A workshop on ECG changes was conducted by Anaesthesia Dept. SGRH on the 29th of April 2023.

The workshop included 4 stations:
1- Ischemia and shape abnormalities
2- Intraop Ecg changes
3- Heart Blocks
4- Cardiac Arrythmias

The workshop was supervised by Prof. Dr. Muzamil Hussain, HOD Anaesthesia Dept. SGRH, Prof. Dr. Liaqat Ali and Assistant Prof. Dr. Sheikh Ziarat Ali.
Final year residents who were trained before hand by the professors served as facilitators.

Post graduate trainees' basic knowledge was assessed by a pretest that was held a night before the workshop. Their queries were addressed and knowledge updated and enhanced. At the end of the workshop a post test was held to assess the gain in knowledge of the residents.
