Dr. Awais Zaka, MD, FACP A nephrologist passionate about community health. Hello all! I am Dr. Awais Zaka. I am a nephrologist based in Lahore, Pakistan.

Though nephrology is my passion and practice, I am equally passionate about community health. I am a US-trained internist and nephrologist. In addition, I have worked as a hospitalist and a nephrologist in multiple hospitals across the US. To help elevate the level of patient care in Pakistan, I have developed the Expert Consult Clinic of Lahore. At this multispeciality complex, we practice medicine with passion and compassion. Since our institution is still in its infancy, I spend most of my time on its premises. When I am not in the clinic, you will find me at home spending time with the family. And whenever I can disentangle myself from the worries of the world, I take refuge in my library.

Our patients gravitate to myths and mysteries. They find mysterious, secret treatments more trusworthy compared to science-based medicines. No wonder they try to skip the diagnostic work up and ask directly for the treatment.

In search of these short cuts, they wander various homeopathics and hakeems, hoping to find a cure for their symptoms, but end up wasting their time and money.

This video explains what do I mean by complete work up for a disease, elaborating this concept with three examples, common symptoms of feet swelling, proteinuria, and shortness of breath.

Genetics is a rapidly evolving landscape, and the genetics of kidney disease is no exception. In fact, advances in genetic research, next-generation sequencing, and the mapping of kidney disease genetics is shedding light on many dark zones in our understanding of kidney disease.

The genetics of kidney disease can be viewed as a spectrum. On the one end, we have monogenic disorders, meaning distinct kidney diseases caused by a defect in a single gene. On the other end of the spectrum, we have more complex genetic predispositions, where genes that do not by themselves cause kidney disease, but contribute to developing kidney damage when the kidneys are under the influence of another disease, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

In this video, we will discuss the role of genes in your kidney disease and why you need this information.
