A new study in Scientific Reports reveals a strong connection between high sugar intake and depression. Tracking over 8,000 adults for five years, researchers found that men consuming more than 67 grams of sugar daily were 23% more likely to develop depression than those eating under 40 grams.

Sugar affects the brain by triggering a rapid dopamine rush followed by a crash, disrupting mood regulation over time. Chronic sugar intake increases brain inflammation and alters neurotransmitters like serotonin, contributing to anxiety, fatigue, and depressive symptoms.

Experts recommend reducing refined sugars in processed foods and beverages and choosing natural alternatives like fruit, honey, or dark chocolate. Lowering sugar intake may stabilize energy, improve mood, and support long-term mental well-being.
