The Pakistan Society for the Welfare of Mentally Retarded Children (PSWMRC) has entered its 62 year of service for the intellectually challenged children. Initially established as a Special Education School in rented premises with 10 challenged children on its rolls, it moved to its own purpose-built premises in Gulberg 3, in 1985, with facilities for 100 challenged children. In 2012 a new building was constructed on an adjoining plot for provision of services to home-based children. In the early 1990s, our services were extended outside our premises and initiated a home-based Outreach Program. Later we initiated the concept of Inclusive Education in partnership with Street Schools of Lahore. In 2013 the Society commenced the Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Program. PROJECTS:

The Society is now looking after 1400 Special Children and their families. We have now focused on new initiatives in order to expand the extent and quality of our cost-effective home-based services. Hopefully, it will encourage the adoption of similar services by other service providers. The PSWMRC now has a Staff of 77 and in addition, 35 Teachers in the IE Schools and 22 Community Resource Persons (CRPs) making a total of 134 Service Providers. The emphasis now is on providing home-based and community-based attention to intellectually challenged in a cost-effective manner. Referral Units:

They have qualified and trained professional staff and apart from providing services to children enrolled in Amin Maktab, ORP, IEP, and CBR, these facilities have now also been made available to special children from outside our Institution. Our children regularly participate in the Punjab, Pakistan, and World Special Olympics. Future endeavours:
• Enhance Husn-e-Rozgar Program.
