Tips on Effective strategies for behavior management in special needs children.

Establish Clear and Consistent Expectations:
Establishing rules and routines helps children understand what is expected of them and provides a sense of structure. Use visual schedules or behavior charts to reinforce expectations and facilitate understanding.

Positive Reinforcement and Rewards:
Recognize and reward your child’s positive actions and efforts. Praise, small incentives, or privileges can motivate special needs children to engage in appropriate behavior and develop positive habits.

Use Visual Supports:
Visual supports are effective in helping special needs children understand and follow instructions. Visual schedules, social stories, and visual cues can assist in reinforcing desired behaviors and reducing anxiety or confusion.

Implement Predictable Routines:
Special needs children often thrive in predictable and structured environments. Establishing consistent daily routines can provide a sense of security and stability. Clear routines help children anticipate and understand what comes next, reducing frustration and challenging behaviors.

Break Tasks into Manageable Steps:
For children who struggle with attention or processing information, breaking tasks into smaller, manageable steps can enhance their ability to complete tasks successfully. This approach reduces overwhelm and promotes a sense of accomplishment.

Utilize Calming Techniques:
Teach your child calming techniques to manage stress and regulate emotions. Deep breathing exercises, sensory breaks, or using sensory tools such as stress balls or weighted blankets can help children self-regulate and reduce disruptive behaviors.

Behavior Modification Tips for children:

Structure:
Create a daily schedule that your child can count on, including school, meals, and bedtime. If they know what is coming next, they’ll be less likely to have a tantrum when changing from one activity to another.

Recognition and Rewards:
In your child’s world, they might often hear what went wrong. Showing them you notice every new skill – no matter how small – and rewarding good behavior will give better results than punishing unwanted behavior; punishment only teaches your child that a tantrum gets attention. Be creative about celebrating successes .

Redirection:
You can point your child’s behavior in a new direction. For example, if they are screaming, you can encourage them to do a task or focus on something else. Instead of being punished for screaming, they are given the power to make a different choice.

Pre language skills:
Joint attention

Be face-to-face when interacting

It is easier for your child to join focus with you if you are at the same physical level . In this way, your child is able to look at you and catch your attention .

Follow your child’s lead to discover what’s caught their attention –
If you carefully listen to and observe your child, you will learn about their interest in the moment.

Point out interesting things in everyday life – as unusual or interesting things happen during the day, get down to your child’s level, look at your child, then look at the interesting event and say something about it. Then look back at your child and wait.

Anything unusual or interesting provides a great time to work on joint attention – it could be a broken toy, squirrels chasing each other, a funny picture in a book, etc.

Do something unexpected and wait – you can set up situations where your child may want to draw your attention to something by placing objects in unusual places (e.g., a crayon in the toothbrush holder), doing something silly (e.g., pretending to put on your child’s shoe instead of your own), or making mistakes happen on purpose (e.g., handing your child a fork to eat their yogurt instead of a spoon).

Pre language skills:Eye Contact:

Babies typically start to make eye contact from around 6 weeks of age.
It's important that adults get up close and face to face when talking to babies, so they can see your face and follow expressions.

The benefits of getting face to face with baby

They can watch the movements you make with your face as you speak
They listen to the sounds that you are making.
This is the first step towards learning about making speech sounds for themselves.
Try chatting to baby through nappy changes, getting up close during tummy time, singing to baby during a feed or talking through bath time.
