Anaemia during pregnancy occurs when the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to both the mother and the baby. This condition is most often caused by iron deficiency, but a lack of folic acid or vitamin B12 can also play a role.
Common symptoms include tiredness, weakness, pale skin, dizziness, and shortness of breath. If left untreated, anaemia can affect the health of both mother and child.
Eating iron-rich foods such as red meat, leafy green vegetables, lentils, and fortified cereals, along with taking prenatal supplements as advised by a doctor, can help prevent and treat anaemia during pregnancy.
