*WOFAPS World Paediatric Surgery Day was celebrated today at the Department of Paediatric Surgery, King Edward Medical University / Mayo Hospital Lahore.*
The event was graced by Prof. Mahmood Ayaz (Vice Chancellor, KEMU), Prof. Haroon Hamid (CEO, Mayo Hospital), Dr. Kashif Bashir (Head of Paediatric Surgery, KEMU/Mayo Hospital),Prof. Saleem (Akhtar Saeed Medical College), Prof. Ali Sheikh (SZH), Dr. Bilal Mirza (Children’s Hospital), and esteemed faculty members from Paediatric surgery, Paediatric Medicine, and allied departments.
Prof. Mahmood Ayaz highlighted that Mayo Hospital Lahore hosts a 540-bedded independent Paediatric area, functioning as a dedicated institute equipped with cutting-edge and modern technology. The institute includes specialized Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Burns, and Paediatric Medicine services, alongside robust support from allied departments—all contributing to the provision of modern and comprehensive paediatric healthcare to the public.
Prof. Haroon Hamid elaborated on the significance of paediatric surgery in managing complex surgical conditions in children and commended the department's role in enhancing surgical care for the paediatric population.
Prof. Saleem emphasized the need for paediatric surgeries to be performed by specialized paediatric surgeons, citing the physiological and functional differences between children and adults, which require tailored surgical approaches.
Dr. Kashif Bashir further advocated for systemic strengthening and urged government officials to initiate designated vacancies for paediatric surgeons at the district and Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) levels, ensuring that specialized surgical care is accessible to children across the province.
The event started with an awareness walk and underscored the critical role of paediatric surgery in child health and highlighted the ongoing commitment of KEMU/Mayo Hospital to excellence in surgical care, education, and outreach.
