Dengue Management in Pregnancy Seminar Held at Lady Aitchison Hospital

A seminar on “Dengue Management in Pregnancy” was held at Lady Aitchison Hospital, organized to raise awareness and strengthen medical understanding of managing dengue infections during pregnancy. The event began with the recitation of the Holy Quran.

Vice Chancellor of King Edward Medical University (KEMU), Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, accompanied by Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Muhammad Moin, Medical Superintendent of Lady Aitchison Hospital Dr. Sobia Javaid, Prof. Nadia Khurshid, Prof. Mehrun Nisa, Prof. Somia Iqtadar, along with faculty members, doctors, and nursing staff of the hospital.

Addressing the seminar, Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz highlighted that KEMU, in collaboration with its nine affiliated nine Hospitals, is providing essential healthcare services to Lahore’s densely populated area, which comprises nearly 37% of the city’s total population.

He further emphasized the three critical health challenges in this densely populated area: access to clean drinking water, cervical cancer, and malnutrition, stating that KEMU is actively working day and night to address these pressing issues.

Focusing on the theme of the seminar, Prof. Ayyaz stressed the importance of dengue management during pregnancy, especially in high-risk and overpopulated areas , where dengue can spread rapidly.

He urged healthcare professionals to promote preventive measures, raise community awareness, and ensure early diagnosis and timely treatment of dengue to mitigate risks to both mothers and unborn children.

Prof. Somia Iqtadar, speaking as the Guest Speaker, delivered an in-depth presentation on “Dengue in Pregnancy,” highlighting the complex nature of the disease and its various facets:

Dengue is a multifactorial disease, involving:

The host (patient)

The virus

The vector (mosquito)

The global disease burden is significant, with only 4 out of 48 known mosquito serotypes contributing to dengue transmission. She cited factors such as inadequate water storage, high population density, and poor waste management as major contributors to dengue outbreaks.

Topics also included:

Transmission mechanisms of the dengue virus

Phases of dengue infection:

Febrile phase

Critical phase

Recovery (convalescent) phase

The seminar concluded with a commitment to strengthening public health efforts in vulnerable communities, particularly with a focus on maternal and child health in relation to vector-borne diseases.
