Pioneering standardized Protocol for DKA management introduced at MMC
Date: August 20, 2025
In a significant advancement for patient care and clinical standardization, MMC has formally adopted a comprehensive new protocol for the management of Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) in adult patients.
This critical initiative, developed under the leadership of Dr. Asad Ullah, Consultant Endocrinologist, establishes for the first time a unified, evidence-based guideline for treating this life-threatening complication of diabetes across all relevant departments within the institution.
Dr Asad Ullah said that the development of this protocol optimize the care pathway for patients presenting with DKA, a complex condition that requires rapid, coordinated and meticulous medical intervention.
He said the protocol provides a detailed, step-by-step framework that guides healthcare professionals from the initial diagnosis in the Emergency Room, through ongoing management in general Medical and allied wards, to critical care in the Intensive Care Unit.
The Endocrinologist said that the primary aim of this initiative is to enhance the quality, safety, and consistency of care delivered to every DKA patient.
"By creating a single standard of best practice, the protocol seeks to minimize variations in treatment, reduce the potential for errors and ensure that all clinical teams are working in concert toward the same patient outcomes. It addresses the entire spectrum of DKA management, including precise diagnostic criteria, fluid resuscitation strategies, insulin administration protocols, electrolyte replacement guidelines, and criteria for patient transition between departments and eventual discharge," he added.
The implementation of this protocol is expected to significantly improve key clinical metrics, including time to resolution of acidosis, reduction in hypoglycemic events during treatment, and overall length of hospital stay. Furthermore, it serves as a vital educational tool for medical staff, nursing teams, and trainees, fostering a deeper understanding of the pathophysiology and modern management principles of DKA.
Dr. Asad Ullah, whose expertise in endocrinology was instrumental in crafting the protocol, emphasized the collaborative nature of the project.
"The effective management of DKA has always been a multidisciplinary endeavor, requiring the seamless coordination of emergency physicians, internists, intensivists, nurses, and pharmacists. This protocol synthesizes the latest clinical evidence into a practical, accessible document that empowers every member of our teams to provide the highest standard of care, regardless of the point of entry into our health system. It marks a commitment to clinical excellence and patient safety that is both measurable and meaningful," he remarked.
