🧠 Behind MRI: A Journey from NMR to Modern Imaging

MRI didn’t appear overnight it’s the result of decades of scientific curiosity, physics, and innovation. These pioneers laid the foundation of one of the most powerful tools in medical imaging.

🔹 Bloch & Purcell (1946)
Introduced the principles of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) the physics backbone of MRI.

🔹 Damadian (1971)
Discovered that diseased tissue shows different NMR signals and built one of the earliest MRI scanners (Indomitable).

🔹 Lauterbur (1973)
Introduced magnetic field gradients, making spatial imaging possible the birth of MRI images.

Peter Mansfield (1970s)
Revolutionized MRI by improving image speed, resolution, and clinical practicality.

📘 Together, these minds transformed NMR physics into MRI a radiation-free window into the human body, changing diagnostics forever.

CT Scan: What Patients Should Know ; Before & During the Scan
As a Technologist, patient education is just as important as image quality. These visuals perfectly explain the CT scan journey in simple steps.

🔹 a CT Scan • Stay still; breath-hold may be required
• Remove all metallic objects
• Fasting may be necessary (depending on the study)
• Contrast may be given orally, IV, or rectally
• CT uses more radiation than X-ray, but is clinically justified
• Always inform the technologist if pregnancy is suspected
🔹 a CT Scan 1️⃣ Preparation & Positioning
You’re comfortably positioned using pillows or straps to avoid motion.
2️⃣ The Scan Begins
The gantry rotates around you, capturing high-resolution cross-sectional images.
(Buzzing or whirring sounds are normal.)
3️⃣ All Done
The scan is painless, quick, and requires no recovery time unless contrast is used.

💡 Key message:
CT scans are fast, safe, and powerful diagnostic tools when performed with proper protocols and patient cooperation.

What is the most important instruction you give patients before a CT scan?

🩻🧠 Imaging: Seeing Inside the Human Body
Medical imaging bridges physics and medicine, allowing us to visualize anatomy, pathology, and function without surgery. Each modality has its own strength choosing the right one makes all the difference.

🔹 -Ray Imaging • Excellent for bone detail
• Fast, widely available
• Commonly used for fractures, chest exams, and dental imaging
⚠️ Uses ionizing radiation

🔹 CT Scan • Provides detailed cross-sectional (2D & 3D) images
• Ideal for trauma, tumors, lung and brain pathology
• Higher diagnostic detail higher radiation dose

🔹 • Uses magnetic fields and radio waves
• Superior soft-tissue contrast
• Best for brain, spine, joints, and muscles
✅ No ionizing radiation

🔹 • Real-time imaging with sound waves
• Safe, portable, and cost-effective
• Widely used in obstetrics, cardiology, and abdominal imaging

📌 Quick Insight:
• X-ray & CT → Structure with radiation
• MRI → Soft tissue without radiation
• Ultrasound → Real-time, safe imaging
• PET → Functional & metabolic assessment

💡 Medical imaging is not just about machines it’s about choosing the right modality for the right clinical question.

🩻 Scanning: More Than Just Cross-Sections
Modern CT technology has transformed how we visualize internal structuresfaster, smarter, and more detailed than ever.
🔹 scanning enables rapid whole-body imaging
🔹 -energy CT improves tissue characterization and material differentiation
🔹 volumes & fly-through views enhance diagnostic confidence
🔹 -length & full-width coverage reduces motion artifacts
🔹 core image quality ensures precise evaluation

As technologists, mastering these capabilities helps us deliver accurate diagnoses with optimized dose and workflow.

Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) is a test to see how fast electrical signals move through a nerve. This test is done along with electromyography (EMG) to assess the muscles for abnormalities. The nerve conduction velocity test is performed to evaluate nerve function. It tests the speed impulses travel through a nerve.
