Infant colic, also known as baby colic, is a common condition in infants characterized by:
1. Intense, persistent crying
2. Drawing up legs, clenching fists, and stiffening the body
3. Passing gas or bloating
4. Fussiness and restlessness
Typically, infant colic:
- Starts around 2-3 weeks of age
- Lasts for 3-4 months
- Occurs in the late afternoon or evening
- Persists for at least 3 hours a day, 3 days a week
The exact cause of infant colic is unknown, but possible triggers include:
- Swallowed air or gas
- Sensitivity to milk or food
- Overstimulation or tiredness
To soothe a colicky baby, try:
- The "5 S's": Swaddling, Shushing, Side/stomach position, Swinging, and Sucking (pacifier or thumb)
- Gentle motion (rocking, car ride)
- White noise or soothing music
- Avoiding overstimulation and ensuring adequate sleep
If your baby's crying persists or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, consult your pediatrician for guidance and support.
