LDL cholesterol is considered the “bad” cholesterol, because it contributes to fatty buildups in arteries. This narrows the arteries and increases the risk for heart attack, stroke and peripheral artery disease (PAD).

The study, Effects of Walnut Consumption for 2 Years on Lipoprotein Subclasses Among Healthy Elders, showed people who ate about half a cup of walnuts every day lowered their LDL levels as well as the concentration and size of LDL particles.
