Bowman layer transplantation in Ophthalmology Department MTI KTH

An innovative techniques for corneal transplantation

Cornea is the transparent, protruding front part of human eye which allows light to pass through it and makes the image which we see with our eyes.

Corneal transplantation procedure by itself is a challenging task, with many complications, including rejection and loss of host eye.

To minimize all the complications innovative techniques have evolved over time to improve the outcomes.

Khyber Teaching Hospital has adopted these new techniques years back and have been successful in improving corneal transplant outcome.

At this point in Pakistan KTH eye super heading in further innovating techniques commonly employed in West, adding further value to our services, these newest approaches are the brainchild of MTI KTH ophthamologist, Associate Professor Dr Zaman Shah and have been named after him, Zaman technique of bowman layer transplantation type 1, 2 and 3.

These new techniques have been started in September 2019 and have been very successful as the rejection is 0%, no sutures are applied and does not need any injectable or general anesthesia to carry out the procedure. These techniques and data outcome have been presented at national and international fora and have received appreciation and applause.

Till date twenty one surgeries have been conducted through Zaman technique of bowman layer transplantation type 1, 2 and 3.

The happy news is that not only the patient gets quality and satisfactory treatment at out eye department, but also we received letters and applications from senior and experienced eye surgeons for training in this field from all over Pakistan.

My first DALK procedure in early 2017(video available on you tube channel, ID dr zaman shah)

DALK procedure was done for advance keratoconus 3 years back on both eyes in the same week when the patient was only 10 years old ( picture of right and left eye).
Sutures were removed after two and half months
Yesterday BCDVA was 6/12(0.5 Decimal).
Astigmatism was - 3.5D and - 4.00D
