Sino nasal Mucormycosis is a dangerous invasive form of fungal infection of the nose and para nasal sinuses which causes necrosis of the structures of nose and sinuses rapidly spreading to other nearby areas especially orbits and brain.
This disease particularly develops in immunocompromised patients like those with diabetes militus, TB, chronic liver and kidney diseases, cancer patients on chemotherapy and those on long-term steroid therapy.
The incidence of this disease has dramatically increased during and after the covid-19 outbreak.
Most of the patients we receive in ENT have well developed disease with complications who are referred cases from other specialities like medicine, ophthalmology, neurosurgery. very few cases come directly to ENT or we diagnose them incidentally.
The mainstay of treatment is medical treatment with antifungal therapy with close hepato-renal monitoring.
Our job as ENT specialists is to do endoscopic debridement of the necrosed tissues during the active disease and later on after complete recovery we rehabilitate the destroyed tissues with possible reconstruction of nasal structures.
I have started my prospective comparative research work on the effects of vinegar washes in cases of Sino nasal mucormycosis.
