𝑺𝒖𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚: 𝑯𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏'𝒔 𝑱𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒚 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑪𝒍𝒖𝒃𝒇𝒐𝒐𝒕
Abdul Hanan was born with clubfoot in both feet, a condition that was detected shortly after his birth. His parents were initially overwhelmed and unsure of what to expect, but they were determined to do whatever they could to give their son the best chance for a normal life.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐬: After birth, Hanan was referred to a pediatric orthopedist,Dr Sikandar Hayat, who diagnosed the severity of the clubfoot. 𝐃𝐫 𝐒𝐢𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫 𝐇𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐭 recommended starting treatment at ClubFoot Clinic, MTI KTH as soon as possible using the Ponseti method, a non-surgical approach that involves gentle manipulation of the foot and serial casting. Hanan’s feet were carefully repositioned each week, and over the course of several weeks, the casts were changed.
During this time, Hanan’s parents felt a mix of emotions—hopeful, but also worried about the process and what it might mean for their son’s future. But they were encouraged by the doctor team and the progress they saw each time the cast was removed.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐢 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝: After the initial series of casts, Hanan required a minor procedure called a tenotomy, where a small tendon in his heel was cut to allow his foot to reposition properly. This was followed by more casting to hold the foot in place as it healed.
At first, it seemed like a lot for such a young baby to endure, but Hanan was resilient. His parents were inspired by his strength and the care of the medical team. As weeks passed, they started seeing a noticeable improvement in his foot alignment.
𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰-𝐔𝐩: Once the casts were removed, Hanan had to wear special braces to maintain the position of his feet. These braces had to be worn for 23 hours a day, and then later just at night, for 4-5 years. There were moments when Hanan resisted the braces, but his parents were committed to making sure he wore them as prescribed.
