💢 Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD)
Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is a condition characterized by sores or ulcers in the lining of the stomach or duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. These ulcers can cause significant pain and discomfort.
▪️Causes
-Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection: This bacteria is a major cause of PUD.
-Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): Overuse of NSAIDs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, can irritate the stomach lining.
-Excessive stomach acid: Sometimes, the stomach produces too much acid, which can irritate the lining.
-Other factors: Other factors that may contribute to PUD include smoking, alcohol consumption, and stress.
▪️Symptoms
-Abdominal pain: Often described as a burning or gnawing sensation.
-Heartburn: A burning sensation in the chest.
-Nausea and vomiting: May occur, especially if the ulcer is bleeding.
-Loss of appetite: Weight loss may occur if the ulcer is severe.
-Black or tarry stools: This may indicate bleeding from the ulcer.
▪️Treatment
The treatment for PUD depends on the underlying cause. Common treatments include:
-Antibiotics: To eradicate H. pylori infection.
-Acid-reducing medications: To decrease the amount of stomach acid.
-Lifestyle changes: Avoiding NSAIDs, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption can help prevent ulcers from recurring.
